I've assumed you couldn't [compile c++] on a chromebook directly You can, actually - just not out of the box. I describe switching to dev mode and using crouton for this in my post. does most of your chromebook development come

"development" means developing what? I probably should have put that in: I work on everything you mentioned, with the exception of mobile apps. I do most of my work remotely (my campus wifi is pretty good), but everything works loc

Is it possible to Ctrl-Alt-Fx to get a console while leaving the browser running? Yup. With dev mode on, you can enable root access to VT2 (which is getty). VT1 is CrOS, so you can switch between the two as you please with Ctrl-Alt-

Using a Chrome plugin for SSH is taking unnecessary risks. What kind of risks are you concerned about? It's a sandboxed NaCl plugin with a strict CSP that runs OpenSSH. I suppose you could get concerned about key security (since the

I wasn't aware of the zRAM tip (I don't think I've ever hit the ram threshold). I'll be turning this on and adding it to the post; thanks. For the curious, there's a good explanatory post here: https://groups.google.com/d/msg/chromebook-ce

crouton eliminates the need for an internet connection, as well as letting you run whatever you want. I can't say I've tried running a vm inside my chrooted OS, but I don't think there'd be anything preventing it.

I switched to the 550 from a eeepc (running debian). CrOS is the real added value, if you ask me: it's the closest thing to the "linux that just works" dream. I'd be curious to see how the cheaper ARM Chromebook performs with these tools (e

I like http://docs.python-guide.org/en/latest enough to point it out specifically (it's linked far down the page). Combined with PEP8, it's a fantastic stylistic resource.

This is exactly the problem that http://toma.hk and http://www.tomahawk-player.org are trying to solve. Their approach: your library becomes (title, artist, album) tuples, and then songs are found at whatever provider you use when you w

I do a lot of this kind of work for gmusicapi, and I still keep a Windows VM around just to use Fiddler. Does anyone have recommendations for other tools? I came away from Burp and Charles disappointed in the past, but that was some time ag

You are confused by the misleading "application-specific password" terminology. These passwords each allow the same degree of access: the password you use on your phone could be interchanged with the one on your xmpp client. Aside from bein

Google's authentication schemes can be incredibly confusing, and they're something I've had to deal with while building an unofficial client to Google Music [0]. Here are two things worth knowing (that are somewhat covered by the article):

Good advice. I've got one to add: #x and y are dictionaries z = dict(x.items() + y.items()) It merges two dictionaries, giving precedence to the second (in Python 2 - Python 3 is a bit more nasty: http://stackoverflow.com/question

I've been pleasantly surprised by how well my chromebook works as a dev machine, and I'd even go as far as to recommend it. A few tips and comments to those considering it: You'll want the secure shell and chrome remote desktop extensions.

What do you see as the difference between the two? Or, put another way, what do you see as the requirements for a disruption? I don't see any reason why a middleman that's doing something innovative shouldn't be considered a disruption.
