A lot of the "entropy" of border definitions is that borders were in fact not rigidly defined until recently, and a lot of areas nominally within a state's borders would have had high degrees of autonomy. Therefore any presen

> Generally people think superhuman = better than the best humans. Because that's what it means . Also, I shudder to think of the prose coming out of a company that decides to "hire" an AI instead of a translator...

Being able to do many things at a level below what trained humans can isn't what any reasonable person would call superhuman performance. If machine translation could perform at the level of human translators at even one pair of langua

A bunch of unsubstantiated claims that boil down to "mediocre is good." Who doesn't want to be a misunderstood genius rather than a failure, or just a roughly average person who dreamed of something more? This is feel-good pa

There is no point to solving a Rubik's cube in the fastest manner possible for humans either. It's just a challenge that some people do for fun. Just like this project is a challenge with slightly different constraints.

It's crazy how people who were terrorized by this guy blame themselves for the fact that he turned out to be a murderer, and couldn't take the punishment. Must have been a master at gaslighting.

Yes. You could be be born with pedophilic tendencies, but through active effort, avoid harming children in any way. As for changing your personality, it's extremely hard and frustrating even if you're not a criminal, and your trai

I've heard a lot of bad things about Wallace's journalistic ethics - basically misrepresenting the actual story, not the big lines but lots of the details, for stylistic effect. He was not a rigorous searcher of actual truth, just

Bit early to say anything definite from one study, but it's nice to have some ammunition against this common idea that somehow all the meaningful thinking that goes on is verbal. "What language do you think in?" It's lik

I'll have to speak in generalities as I don't know enough about NumPy in particular to comment. > That being said, I don't have a good understanding of how strong the distinction is between "design issues" and &q

But isn't the issue here that completely redoing the API would break a lot of code? I don't see how throwing money at the problem would fix this. I don't use any of these libraries, so maybe I'm totally off base, but it

I can't remember who, but someone observed that (according to them) the reason people will emotionally invest in teams, players, artists etc., instead of just cheering for whoever performs best at any given time, is that they like to bet so

I doubt taboo words are (always, or necessarily) related to taboo thoughts. It's not taboo to think about fucking, but in many contexts it's taboo to use the word instead of its "milder" alternatives.

Are we all hopelessly stupid, that we cannot learn to avoid this mistake? Many of us are, though I wouldn't say it is necessarily only stupid people who do it. I consider it a good principle that the words in a reply in forums like this s

That's an argument from authority, plain and simple. Whether or not you know anything about lisp, your comments about it should be judged on their merits alone. If you truly don't know what you're talking about, it should be apparent to tho

I'm not sure I'd regard the Sokal affair as trolling. It's hardly being an asshole, unless you consider exposing idiots being an ass, and it's hardly fishing for controversy, unless exposing any kind of potentially controversial stuff is tr

It doesn't take much intelligence to follow two websites, but it does take some more effort. Also, it's perhaps that the site now caters more to the target audience than to the thing that unites them (Y combinator/startups).

I guess the existing user mass is a big reason why changing focus instead of starting again is preferrable. Personally, I don't care about startup news, so I didn't bother to register until now; obviously I think it's a good idea. Perhaps m
