I think the key deference here is that the web is open and people can build competitors on a level playing field. They don't have anti-competitive restrictions placed on them by their competitors (i.e. Apple and Google).

Fair point, but doesn't answer my question. Is it still impossible to practically develop apps, even basic ones, using only open source tools/libs?

Very much a tangent, but is it still impossible to build apps for android using 100% open source tools? I haven't jumped on the android bandwagon, but I've been thinking about developing an android app and host it on f-droid provi

How would responding to a phone number, one given by the initiator himself, verify that he represents a company? Couldn't a fraudster just give them his or her a own phone number? I would have expected that the money they siphon thanks

Given that 90% of normal people use browsers that don't have this restriction, I don't think Mozilla's threat model makes sense. Also, users who are susceptible to being tricked into installing an addon can just as easily be

If you're on a system where flatpak is installed, you can easily and quickly create installable flatpaks yourself (complete with their dependencies) in case Nintendo decides to abuse law to intimidate and extort flatpak itself. 1. Add

From an operational standpoint, this is completely WP Engine's fault. You should not depend on other people's services, doubly so if they're public and free, when your big as Wordpress Engine is. Wordpress is completely withi

Do any other versions provide cached versions of the pages they crawl? Far too many sites preform shinanigins based on geoip/ua. Yandex, DuckDuckGo, and BraveSearch, please provide cache the pages you crawl and make them available to y

I don't know how their cars' UI is designed (and I hope I never have to) but if it's the only way to determine car speed or battery capacity, then this goes well beyond infotainment. No wonder they were forced to do a recall.

This is the part that is most interesting to me. Sure, judge will eventually get his way but the secondary collateral damage to Brazil is going to be significant. I wonder if the judge had considered this in his ruling.

Mocking a siting emotional judge who is used to having his way _definitely_ qualifies as a macho move in my book. Whether it is a move that elon can afford, we still don't know.

Somebody needs to patiently sit down with this judge and explain to him that the jurisdiction of his court (and his understanding of technology) has limits. Good luck, Brazil.

Perhaps an over-correction, but I've switched to Go. Any language with a proper standard library would do, but I found Go's modern and useful standard library to be well-worth the inefficiency and clunkyness of that language. The

I do. Please mention the top instances you know where people were caught because they did what GP described. I'll wait. People get deanonymized in spite of using Tor and Monero, not because of it.

Unfortunate but expected. You get tired after swimming against the current for so long. The rust community has for better or worse settled on wild unauditable dependency graphs. A real shame given how delightful the base language is (ignori

Modern languages make offline builds far more difficult then they have to be, unfortunately. Rust, for example, buries its off-line installer on another domain. Rust also doesn't advertise or encourage bundling dependencies. Lastly, un
