Maybe it's possible that there are plenty of people out there who care about "ephemera", and yet are also capable of programming a computer or soldering things together? I think it's possible. Sure, Jobs did. On the o

This point cannot be overstated. I'd never have been a hacker without vast quantities of unsupervised, unfiltered internet time around age 9-12. Same here. Emphasis on "vast quantities," "unsupervised," and "

To put things into perspective, the company I worked for responded to bug reports by hiring a team of people whose role was to manually alter the database any time a customer reported a data problem. Dozens of times per day. In other word

I worked in the industry for a little while. At this point, some companies depend on having that daily downtime. Their whole development is based around the fact that they will have guaranteed downtime. It's built right into their so

A surprisingly poor move from someone who historically has been a game development hero. Before reading the article and understanding the campaign, I initially thought Notch axed it because this guy wanted to create a film about Notch. It

There's a difference between reading 1984 and seeing articles of how things play out in real life in your own country. There is no difference. Nothing has changed. Nothing will change. I was going to make a lengthy comment detailin

This is FUD. As incredible as it seems, MtGox's problems are, in fact, technical. And it was quite a relief to realize this. Also, there is minimal danger of a bank run. MtGox makes a profit off of every transaction. Therefore they

Interesting... This may be the first time someone's tried to use HN as a platform for phishing.

The most newsworthy aspect of this post is that the NSA didn't compartmentalize their information. This spidering should have been impossible at the network level, even as an admin.

Which problems do Surface tablets solve? For example, iPhone completely changed my life overnight, mostly due to its navigation features and ability to look up phone numbers. I think Surface will only be dominant if it solves a problem for

Is the Bitcointalk poster lying, then? One of these two stories can't be true, and the poster has no reason to lie... (Not that people on the internet need one.)

The Monte Carlo fallacy is believing that if something happens more frequently than normal during some period, then it will happen less frequently in the future. This isn't an instance of that. If the goal was to flip tails in a coin

The most important thing you can do is relax. Sure, life is pretty grim in the sense that you can't do whatever you want unless you're rich. On the other hand, your life as a coder is far, far higher quality than e.g. a construct

There's a Mathematica 10 now, already? Interesting. I'm still a happy 8 user, myself. Is there much reason to upgrade? It'd probably be good for them to pay more attention to backwards compatibility...

This is a great step by Rackspace, to be clear. All I'm saying is that it's mistaken to believe that most big companies will force you to sign an agreement stating that your code written on your own free time is theirs. Actually,
