1. I still need to grow my .gitignore file as I add more .el files of my own. 2. A similar scheme would be to maintain a directory called ~/elisp in git and make ~/.emacs a symlink to ~/elisp/emacs. And pretend that ~&#

Really? C-h v user-emacs-directory RET says programs in Emacs store information in this directory . To me, this says ~/.emacs.d/ is not intended for humans. user-emacs-directory is a variable defined in ‘subr.el’. Its valu

I have never understood the rampant practice of using ~/.emacs.d/ for one's personal Elisp files. Most of what is in this directory appears to be machine generated files from various packages. To me, it seems much cleaner t

OpenBSD stopped claiming "N years without a localhost hole in the default install!" in 2000. See https://web.archive.org/web/20000815063126/http://openbsd.or... and https://web.archi

The biggest stumbling blocks for IPv6 are the fact that many prominent cloud services don't fully support IPv6. Or have outright broken IPv6, e.g. Digital Ocean's /124

I am an extremely casual FreeBSD user. I also happen to be an obsessive compulsive software updater conditioned to systems restarting and coming back after a few minutes. So this hanging thing had me completely baffled. It was also my fi

I can add that I have experienced upgrade problems firsthand while running FreeBSD on Digital Ocean. In my case, rebooting after an upgrade would hang. https://www.freebsd.org/security/advisories/FreeBSD-EN-15:05.

The original title is misleading. It should say Most GitHub projects are libraries or frameworks . It is quite a leap to go from 60% GitHub projects to most open source software .

Apple will not make Macs forever. A macOS-ARM VM that runs on iOS is plausible. There is certainly precedent for this sort of thing (Classic on PowerPC Macs, Rosetta on Intel Macs). We might even have Homebrew ARM :p

The vast majority of issues will arise from software defects, not hardware defects. Exactly. The last thing I want in my house is a smoke alarm with software written by idiots like me.

I am in the middle of reading Write Your Own Compiler by Nils M Holm . See http://t3x.org/t3x/book.html for the book and the accompanying code. I like it so far. T3X is a tiny (made up!?) procedural language.
