It’s very much possible to build a unikernel in rust. Google ‘rust unikernel’ and you’ll get results. In fact I would argue that rust is much more suited to write low level things like operating systems and unikernels than ocaml. Having sai

It is an impression (possibly an unfounded/unfair one) and the whole point of my question is for others to give me their opinions. Nim is certainly a feature-full language. Look at the left sidebar on https://nim-lang.org&#x

I am ... confused by Nim a bit. Nim on the surface has a dream set of features: python like syntax, strong types, compilation to C, good garbage collection, good metaprogramming... OTOH there seems to be a rapid accumulation of features. Th

I’m aware they maintain forks and patches for many packages. However development resources are always precious! Now openbsd needs to devote them to backporting from rapidly evolving llvm. Effort that could have been spent elsewhere. Also no

I am not convinced with your conclusion that metaprogramming does not make code less readable. My personal experience speaks otherwise. Metaprogramming has a lot of "magic" associated with it which makes code hard to debug and und

Its a problem while debugging. The code has often been so transformed that it can be unrecognizable.

That is true. But some other models of concurrency (e.g. golang channels) _do admit_ static typing. This is a weakness of actor model adopted in BEAM. Its a tradeoff -- do you go with untyped BEAM concurrency or typed concurrency like in go

Agree with the sentiment behind a lot of the comments above. Elixir/Erlang are awesome and there is a lot of vitality in those communities at the moment (more in Elixir perhaps). Elixir is definitely a darling of HN but there are some

This an important and pertinent question. I’ve often wondered the same so I thank you for asking it. I find QT UI applications just a bit more consistent than GNOME ones. It’s a subjective impression...

Races occur due to internal program behavior that is different with exactly the same external inputs. In your packets example, if we were to feed the external inputs through a record/replay mechanism we could debug the multi-threaded p

Thanks again for your detailed response. I was curious to know why you choose BEAM because Golang vs BEAM is often a genuinely confusing option. Thanks for your insights on NIFs. Additionally, as someone in this thread has already pointed o

Thanks for your reply. The BEAM VM is amazing (and I'm a fan of Elixir) but I'm trying to see what benefit you're getting out of BEAM if you're using NIFs. Because the moment you use NIFs then your VM can crash (without

Good point. Whats the point of using the Erlang VM if your NIF could bring down the whole VM. How is this different from using any other language like Go then to implement this platform? The approach confuses me because there is so much pra

Thanks for your reply. Your response is extremely spot on. I agree that a type system will _not_ catch all errors, only some. My limited point was: it would be interesting to see statistically what % of time the ERTS (in real deployed produ

Elixir Erlang/OTP are indeed a joy. Everything seems so organically put together and integrated! I love the OS-like feel of the platform. However, I'm curious: does the lack of types (both Elixir and Erlang are dynamically typed a
