Stripe's current design went live sometime in September 2016. Mixpanel's went live somewhere in Jan 2017. For a design overhaul of this scale, it's unlikely there was any 'inspiration'.

I suspect there's a huge amount of halo effect happening in this discussion. Company makes good product, company gets funded,company hires good designers, company spends a lot on marketing... people go "wow, amazing design!".

I could agree with you even more than what I already do. My social life is on WhatsApp groups. No one in my social circle uses Facebook Messenger for anything relevant. The number of friends' photos has steadily gone down over the year
