I think this newsgroup post from Brendan (Eich) summarizes why that's not going to happen: http://groups.google.com/group/mozilla.marketing/msg/0d3ceac...

The best part is that Firefox 4 is going to ship with four backends for its layers API: Direct3D 9 for XP, Direct3D 10 for Vista/7, OpenGL for Mac/Linux, and software as a fallback.

That quote is out of context. Yes, GDI on XP is faster than GDI on Vista or 7, but that is irrelevant to any discussion of IE9. Direct2D is a much more expressive API than GDI (think Cairo vs XRender on Linux), so obviously it's going to be

> OK, it uses the GPU to render pages ? It actually doesn't -- not release versions at any rate. Are you confusing Chrome with IE9 or Firefox 4?

Chrome's philosophy is self-consistent, and that's probably the only objective metric, even though this means that they produce (to me) a useless browser. (I use set image as wallpaper all the time.)

I'm a TA for an OS course that is closely following the Berkeley CS162 course, down to using Java for assignments. We've had much less trouble than with the C++ we used to use.

Yeah, the only NES games I can play now are the Mario and Zelda ones (I never played Metroid 1 as a kid, and can't get into it now). SNES games I can get into much more easily.

I bet it's mainly because of Google's super-aggressive pushing of Chrome on all its properties.

I don't think there's an easy way to do that -- I bet you could write a fairly simple program with pywin32 to do that. But there's definitely a ton of hard-linking going on in there.

Well, the file he's quoting is C (note the lang:c filter). OTOH he's quoting Mozilla 1.7.7, which is positively ancient (Firefox 1.0.x I think).

The right solution is to stop acting outside the specs and have the meat of the bootloader in a (possibly separate) partition. The term "embedding area" seems to be entirely made up by the GRUB developers -- I couldn't find a single referen

It is not a small language Guy Steele, in his famous talk at OOPSLA '98: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8860158196198824415 explains why "small" languages are not good.

Chrome is currently the fastest at this No it isn't. Firefox in software mode (release builds) is generally faster than Chrome when it comes to canvas. Firefox in hardware mode (pre-release, Direct2D) is around as fast as IE.

Yeah, that seems to be what most of the Windows bashing comes down to: taste. Yes, while I don't particularly like Win32, GNU make is objectively horrible.
