Thanks for sharing. I've recently dived in too, here's some resources I'm using: https://github.com/functional-koans/clojure-koans http://www.4clojure.com/ http://www.amazon.com/Joy-Clojure-Thinking-Way/dp/1935182641...

My concern with this has always been that you can never really have any time off if you're supporting a product, i.e. always having to check your email making sure customer questions are being answered and your servers aren't on fire.

I think this can be very true of theoretical research, but when I entered grad school I was pretty interested in the applied fields. My problem was I didn't have substantial industry experience to identify the labs that were doing real appl

I dropped out of a PhD program because I was disillusioned and never found a path of value to my group's work. After reading this I really wonder if what was missing was context and world experience. So much of what's wrong with a lot of ac

After a handful of side projects that never got the traction I was hoping for, I came upon Bret Victor's recent CUSEC talk on principle based inventing. Unless you're lucky enough to stumble on an idea that has instant traction, any path to

Excuse me if I'm totally off (I haven't actually used clojure, just evaluating it), but regarding the lacking libraries: isn't the fact that it runs in the JVM nullify this by having access to the rich java libraries?

I think the warning signs of a 'gold rush' are when ethics go out the window (most recent example is the mortgage industry). Capitalism is all about going where the money is but if the correct rules aren't in place and the culture isn't str

I get the same exact feeling. The frequency of lax startup ethics seems to be increasing by the count of HN articles reporting it. I left wall street for the same reason you mention. More and more we hear 'this time it's different', but fro

Hedge funds typically cater to two different types of clientele. In Bernie Maddof's case it was probably mostly private wealth management. The other is institutional money.

There's at least one big fallacy in this post: "This is a tiny fraction of the 1% fleecing the rest of the 1%." This is dangerously inaccurate. A significant portion of hedge fund assets are from institutions not wealthy individuals. This i
