Sounds entertaining. I'll give the developer credit: he/she knows what he wants from that project, and that's half the battle. No feature creep in his mind.

I noticed that too; I wonder how much they had to pay for that (near-ubiquitous) placement.

If you license it right, anything's possible. (i.e. major corporations can't use your code illegally or they'll get caught.) Just because the source code is publicly viewable doesn't mean anyone can take it without permission; small people

Actually, links work now for some reason. I personally really like this format because it lets me see comments right via RSS. The only problem is that Yahoo then tends to cache them, and so if I want to see the _latest_ comments, I must vis

I set up a Yahoo Pipe a while ago for comments (which pulls in each article's URL with comments), but lately all URLs have become unclickable (except for article title). I'm not sure if that was done by HN or Yahoo. Anyway: http://pipes.ya

As far as I can recall, you can change just about anything. If CSS can't do it, you can always fallback to a little javascript, but it's pretty simple to customize.

You can remove the branding with CSS rather easily. I've looked for any guidelines on that in their TOS, but I don't see any. I removed the big Disqus logo on from my comments page, but people can still see that it's Disqus. Their guideline

Right. I think it's notable that karma and downmodding seems to generally take a back seat here. Very rarely have I seen something go -1 or worse that I still consider useful or legit. Generally, HN seems to favor commenting over downvoting

Ouch. At least images can be loaded after the text, and broadband (>1.5Mbps) speed would still load them in a couple of seconds.

I'm not an expert on pricing strategies, so this is just my opinion tossed out there: That's a reasonable, relatively low price point, so I think a small discount would be all right. But it depends on how many users you have, and what their

I'd say it depends on the number of beta testers; you say you had a big beta list, so it might make more sense to offer a discount rather than just free versions, if you intend on doing anything at all. Is the Pro version more featureful th

> For a business, only if you want to remain a business. Untrue. Disregarding IE6 at say, 20%, implies that you only consider 80% of web users your target market. There's nothing wrong with that.

I love my iPhone, but I still yearn for a device that will let me take notes as fast as pen and paper. By the time a note-taking application opens, I'd already have my note written down. (Application launch times already take iPhone apps ou

Give yourself enough time that you're confident you'll be able to finish the maintenance within that timeframe. I was bitten more than once by scheduling a maintenance window too small, and then becoming frantic as the maintenance window pa

These days I'm not concerned about Microsoft -- the companies that concern hackers w/r/t overtaking their product would be Apple and Google.

The article noted this: "They faulted cost pressures on keyboard manufacturers for not making keyboards more snoop proof." So if this is true, at least it appears that new keyboards could be improved to block eavesdropping.

It's an issue because the GPL is viral, and AJAX libraries are like any other DLL in practice. You can't link with DLLs that are GPL without requiring your own program to be GPL too -- that's why the LGPL was invented. The GPL license would

Exatly. We're often at a higher level of abstraction from the hardware now, but that doesn't mean our job is any easier; we're just tackling broader problems.

Better yet, set Keep-Alive to something very low (1 or 2), so that when users load a page, any initial assets can still reuse the same connection, but you'll still drop the connection quickly to serve other users.
