Thank you, I believe you are right. I did try to make a race condition happen using += and am having a hard time. Here's my code import threading i = 0 def test(): global i for x in range(1000000):

Python is a nice language with a shitty implementation. The ergonomics and productivity gain of the “nice language” part keeps winning over the other part.

I think by “data races” the parent means that code doesn’t lock around operations like += and len(). The data races are there in theory but do not exhibit due to the GIL.

I feel like LLMs won't find their success in this "here's a LLM product!" kind of way but more by being leveraged internally by companies to increase velocity, do more with fewer employees, etc. I've certainly gaine

Housing is a bad example because there’s not enough supply for competition to work, so prices can become arbitrary without rent control.

Thanks I appreciate the info. I love python and I use it for nearly everything. But it often gets dogged for perf, so I wonder about the reasoning in using it for high frequency trading despite the bad rap.

Was the exchange actually running on Python? Or was Python used for less intensive stuff?

Yeah March 2020. I was not actively trading stocks back then so I watched passively. I do think market timing is bad as a general strategy but sometimes the writing is on the wall. I have timed the market successfully since then though, w

Anything on the way down in a steep selloff is a good buy, so you did good. Also WRT the pandemic it was pretty clear that there was going to be panic selling, as soon as a pandemic was announced. What wasn’t clear was where the bottom was

Although when the s&p dropped 20% in a few days in March 2020 — that was clearly a buy signal. And when tech stocks dropped by 70-90% in Nov 2022. Those stocks are now up 2x/3x from bottom. Sure, long term it probably doesn’t work

That's cool, it's kind of like Scratch [*] for business. Presumably the market is people who don't like Retool because it is too high-level (not enough control) and don't like code because it's too low-level (too mu

I agree. And what makes python a nice choice for this is that you can go wild in the beginning and then gradually add type hints as your project takes shape.

Sure. The “serious” stuff is written in more serious languages and the rapidly changing experimental stuff in more lenient and expressive languages.

If you didn't use **kwargs you'd have to copy and paste every kwarg and its default value from the superclass into the subclass, which is ridiculous IMO.

Point taken. I think they strive for high impact, at least high market impact, in the application phase. What they end up with doesn't reflect what they want, kind of by definition. The extreme majority of YC startups fail.

I did qualify it as stretched to the extreme. But it's the same basic framework: Build yourself into an influencer with a high follower count, then sell them basic products.
