These literalist justices are of the mind that if it wasn’t explicitly written, then it’s not allowed. Generalist/broad swath language is to be ignored. Only specific instruction is to be interpreted.

That works in principle but not in practice. The core issue in roe v wade was tossing out precedent while failing to show reasoning why tossing out precedent should be ok. So now the court seems to be chaotic. Whatever the makeup of the cou

Many people don’t vote because they’re skeptical that their vote can affect anything — either because they’re in a definite minority in their legislatures or they think elections are bought, in a “changing minds” sense.

I’ve done this with retry logic in each concurrent writer (retry if you can’t lock the file with a short timeout) and it works fine enough.

I think in the case of a one-time payment there’s a record that you paid Mullvad, but there’s no link to an account number.

My first thought is that there could easily be a malicious actor within the not yet laid off employees who could now be actually incentivized to do their bad deed seeing clearly that they may get no notice when fired.

No I don’t support this. I keep trying to figure out how it could work, so I can understand the point of view of the people who propose it. I haven’t seen any salient proposal.

Yeah. I guess that model implies that the govt will take a percent ownership of whatever you own. I think it would destroy the prospect of high risk high reward ventures like Tesla. Maybe the tax rate can be divided by a volatility metric s

What happens to the excess is what’s interesting. And if it’s in volatile assets, how do you shave off the top? E.g. your stocks go way above the limit in a bubble but then crash by 50% right after you got taxed.

It’s like betting and gambling. The losers keep coming back thinking they can time it correctly this time around. The game is basically putting money in to get it higher, and timing the top. Crypto being largely meaningless in terms of valu

The oppressiveness described by the article is not about computers, but about rigid design — design with few affordances. Or, design with missing affordances — affordances that intuitively should exist but do not, due to various material

My problem has never been invalidation as stated in the article, but how to manage interdependent cache entries, so that when one is invalidated, the dependent ones must also be invalidated. For example get_user(123) and get_users_for_org(4

Great article, and eye-opening. Related tangent: VCs are trending in the same direction. Even YC increasingly wants to “see more” all the time before funding. That’s what they tell founders who are rejected in the interview phase. Come back

As far as I’m concerned, you used Twitter correctly. From what I can tell by browsing, enabling people to tell other people where to shove it is the platform’s raison d’être.

A rescinded offer is basically equivalent to getting laid off immediately. Honestly I’d rather get a rescinded offer than a layoff 3 months into the job.

It seems to be Apple's vehicle for making p2p payments, particularly through messages. It's also a virtual debit card, so you can spend or transfer the money, but it seems the its raison d'être is p2p payments.

I totally agree, broadly speaking, that people in SW age out quickly. But I live in New Mexico and have observed that white collar/software eng. people are not nearly as affected. I'm kind of a night owl who gets out after 6pm and

It's just aesthetic. Heavy sun exposure throughout life leads to wrinkles and sun spots/splotchy skin later in life. White collar workers likely needn't worry, though. That advice is more for people who spend their working ho

There isn’t any scenario right now that makes it attractive to lock your money for 10+ years into 3% yields.
