If you don’t want cloud storage to do this, you need to use cloud storage that doesn’t allow sharing between users. If it allows that, people will misuse it for piracy, which will lead to this.

That’s a blast from the past for me! Some years ago, in 2014 or so, at a small startup I was in, we tried to make all communication encrypted. So we had as an official communication channel just Jabber and OTR. (Note, it was before Slack ex

Exactly. Reading the docs makes me feel something is a bit “wrong”. But I felt like this before when I switched from subversion to git (“why would I download all history, always???”) so, who knows.

You never really know. But nobody is going to burn zero days on mass surveillance. It’s just for specifically targeted people.

There are two different types of attacks. One is fly-by attacks by random viruses and ransomware. For those cases, I would not worry about pictures. Other is when you are targeted by regimes with essentially unlimited budget. In that case y

lol LinkedIn used to be famously horrible in dark patterns and auto-following everyone. And what did it get them? Billions USD from Microsoft. So dark patterns work.

Facebook tracks you almost obsessively all over the web, and on its own website (with many features designed specifically to get more info about you). Twitter does neither. Which is great for the users, but probably horrible for the adverti

Apple did not coin the term. For a time they wanted to sue people for using it, but they changed their mind I guess. (And by now it has become too generic.) But they attacked the original podcast software - iPodder - for using "iPod&qu

You have not read many "hit pieces" then. My favourite one from Wired is when they critically examined Project Xanadu leader and its history. It's from 1995 but people still keep linking to it whenever Xanadu is mentioned. h

It's kind of easy - spam. Spam protection is hard. Forcing to use phone numbers is a "easy" protection against spam. It's harder to get thousands of SIMs than thousands of usernames.
