That's the root of it, isn't it? America is pretty great if you're in the upper 20% or so, and otherwise it's losing ground fast.

They have to fill out a disclosure form, but it's on a 30 day delay, often more because they file late. Be wary of all the third party congressional stock trackers for this reason.

I think a lot of the following comes the old-fashioned nature. In an age of hyperscalers that want to sell you a private cloud and full stack certification to make it your job to use their software and want to charge you $500/mo for a

I have a couple of instances of this same pattern for various things that have been running for 5+ years, none of them have suffered downtime caused by the infrastructure. I use ansible scripts for the web servers, and the DO API or dashboa

I use the LB's for high availability rather than needing load balancing. The LB + 2 web back-ends + Managed DB means a project is resilient to a single server failing, for relatively low devops effort and around $75/mo.

The point of an LB for these projects is to get away from a single point of failure, and I find configuring HA and setting up the networking and everything to be a pain point. These are all low-traffic projects so it's more cost effect

I use DO's load balancers in a couple of projects, and they don't list Cloudflare as an upstream dependency anywhere that I've seen. It's so frustrating to think you're clear of a service then find out that you'

Do we need more farmers, or for food to be more 'valued' in a monetary sense? The developed world is awash in affordable food. Even machine tools are incredibly cheap and accessible, the issues around those are related to where th

Not in the sense of "can't be opened without the key". Good locks buy you two things: Deterrence (maybe), and a set minimum of time and noise requirements to bypass them. If your lock reputably takes 3 minutes to pick or a Ra

I mostly scrape government data so the sites are a little 'behind' on that trend, but no. Even JS heavy sites are almost always pulling from a JSON or graphql source under the hood. At scale, dropping the heavier dependencies and

A point orthogonal to this; consider whether you need browser automation at all. If a website isn't using Cloudflare or a JS-only design, it's generally better to skip playwright. All the major AIs understand beautifulsoup pretty

The expert from the videos, Irving Finkel, is a wonderful speaker and personality. I highly recommend watching his lectures and British museum feature on YouTube if you’re interested in the ancient world.

Sure, but everyone agrees that first class is full of perks. “People taller than 6’1 can sit here without being in pain” shouldn’t be a multi-hundred dollar up charge.

I think DC has the start of a really good system here. There's universal Pre-K 3 and 4. Most elementary schools offer it, but you can also get a large subsidy to go towards a private daycare. I'd love to see that expanded to all a

I think programming is a good example profession. For a simple model, let's say you hire programmers for three reasons: 1. Because you have (X) work to get done to run your business. Once that work is done, there is no more work to do.

The fundamental question is "will the LLM get better before your vibecoded codebase becomes unmaintainable, or you need a feature that is beyond the LLM's ceiling". It's an interesting race.

Sugar and alcohol are clearly labelled and provide an obvious benefit, so people feel empowered to make that cost/benefit trade-off. Microplastics do nebulous harm, and it's difficult or impossible to control intake.

Going by the lower limit of 20,000 ng/kg, a 70kg person has a limit of 1,400,000 ng/day for DEHP and 70MM ng/day DEHT. So am I reading this right you're probably an order of magnitude below the 'safe' limit eve
