I used to think the same as Jared. I was 14 and writing DirectX 8 mini games for fun in VB6. Thought I could get a job soon, and I'd set myself up nice and early in life. In high school I had a few "clients" for websites and such as well, a

I hate to refute everything you've just said, but sadly what you've described has not been the case my (tiny) 7 years working in IT.. I really hope you're right about the future though.

Thanks for posting this. It actually made my skin crawl reading the article and imagining the state of software a decade or two from now in a world filled with Gabriellas, because "that's what you've gotta do to get ahead". Of course, with

I can choose option 4? I don't have the time and/or financial support to even give it a real shot. Or is that the same as not taking enough risks?

It'd be good if the major browsers decided to adopt one (or some?) of LESS/Stylus/SASS natively. Then it wouldn't be such a pain to tweak your stylesheets using these..

Doesn't seem to be working very well on my FF 14.0.1 on Mac 10.8 - works okay in latest Chrome though :)

You're right, my response was probably a little angsty. There are some that are willing to expand and learn more and they usually turn out to be awesome developers with innovative ideas all the time. I was probably more referring to the "jo

Wow.. so I really could have landed a programming job when I was 13? Damn. Maybe I should have just believed in myself more like this guy. I shudder to think of the quality of his code and the projects he or people like him are let loose on

If it's just for uploading files, I would (if you haven't already) seriously consider your options for just building it into the web app. Otherwise, I'd vote Qt/C++ as I've seen quite a few solid, fast apps built on this platform, though I'

Hmm, interesting that you guys are all about facts and convey that without a shred of optimism. Regardless of the source or accuracy of the article, would it not be awesome if the answer was yes?

This is really good to hear from someone in the field, thank you. Those numbers for the methadone program could be purely from population growth, but then considering the state of the world its probably not entirely either. (Not that I'd kn

It's like real-time reddit.. its be fun, but probably hard to make constructive, lol I like it, and envy the fact you could just create this on a whim over a weekend. I wish I had that kind of discipline when it comes to some of my spontane

This is the second post I've seen of late with someone trying to redesign or change the face of HN. Has nobody thought to just create an awesome userscript/style?

In that case.. - I feel there is more important stuff for me to do with my life than worry about the structure of a common language. I actually think you answered your own question :) A love of simplicity is as meaningful as a love of good

I still don't see anyone offering a viable solution.. There are a lot of variables that come into play for a generic copyright or IP law that encompasses all creative works. The first of which should probably be scope. Physical and non-phys
