Yeah I was responding to a post asking why we should allow open access, given that some of those with access will do bad things. I agree with you. Ethics doesn't demand that existing private tech be made available. Who's saying th

You’re probably right but it will be an arms race with ever more sophisticated mitigation techniques being deployed to filter. I’d say Neil Stephenson has a pretty good take on what this might look like in his recent book: Fall, where in ev

That’s an understandable view point. However, “Security through obscurity” just doesn’t work. Worse, trying to keep something from people really only punishes/limits the rule followers. The bad guys get it anyway so this gives the good

100% agree that release timing is part of the allure of WWDC. That’s part of the show! You know you’re going to be using this great stuff very soon. I disagree that Google’s products aren’t as interesting. They have great tech. I’ve been ve

In a word: showmanship. Apple makes its sales events (WWDC is a sales event) feel like something big, an occasion, something special to look forward to, like the revealing of a secret to the in-crowd. This focus on the spectacle, the presen

I suspect there are many edge cases that cause this. It’s not just the WiFi scanning or Airplay / Touchbar. I noticed this delayed ping pattern as far back as 2016. I spent some troubleshooting time and suspected it was something in Ma

I disagree. The modem was the transport mechanism of the BBS and it did shape the experience. With that said, just as we are still seeing great new games being produced with 8-bit style graphics in a world where the hardware can do fully im

100% correct. This isn’t just a C64 demo. This is a game that was an Easter egg included as an audio track on the vinyl album We Are Stardust by Lukehash. I didn’t know any of this before you linked the site so thanks! Now I’ve got a copy o

Gibson is still telling the same story. If you read his more recent works, like The Peripheral, you'll see it. It's still Cyberpunk. The aesthetic has been modernized. It's less neon and more black and a little too familiar,

It may seem odd to some, but I think the world was better off with McAffee alive. I doubt he took his own life. He seems to be the sort of fellow who would in some way enjoy going to court, even if only to have his point of view heard.
