My 4.5yo has been using iOS since a bit before 2, has his own ipod touch and uses the family 1st gen iPad. He came home from kindy excited by using a PC. I couldn't understand it but now I do. Kids love to learn and he needs new challenges

There are plenty of people outside the US, religious or not, who have no problems with science. Religion only seems to be anti-science in the USA and amongst a tiny minority in the Islamic world. I wonder if religion is really the issue. Is

If someone (looking at SanDisk) were to make a range of SD cards for servers and lightweight ARM desktops that would be of real interest. Because the current stuff out there for phones and cameras is of variable quality and is about the wor

Most people don't need more than 4G per process so I wish stuff like the linux x32 abi became standard. All the extra registers without the huge pointers. Would be handy for squeezing more into a cheap VPS. Not to mention the cpu cache.

I haven't used an XOR linked list since my Amstrad 6128. I think probably independently discovered but not sure. It is a pretty obvious thing to do on a memory limited machine. Nice to know people still know about this stuff post the 8 bit

There is a lot of good quality stuff that comes out of China but equally there are people happy to risk our lives for a bit of profit. Some of this stuff clearly doesn't meet safety standards and shouldn't be in sale. Here is another one:

Only if you are totally ignorant of history. My Australian state wasn't settled by convicts just as the whole of the US wasn't settled by one ship full of Puritans. My state had a planned colonisation by free settlers attracted to civil and

One of the advantages of being a member of parliament or a senator is that you have Parliamentary Privilege for anything you say in the house or senate. Perhaps if Assange got in he could leak stuff in the senate without having to pretend t

I want to like Minix. I had a copy of Design and Implementation and was going to download Minix when I heard of this new Linux thing, filled a bunch of floppies with an early Linux distro and never looked back. One of AST's arguments agains

There is probably some good research in programming languages out there though every time someone goes looking they encounter the ACM paywall. Back to PHP I guess.

Well to be fair Javascript is kind of limited so Ryan does not have language support for coroutines unless he wants to redesign Javascript. Even better for node.js would be something a bit more CSP-like such as goroutines and channels but a

Perhaps I am just cynical. I did not mean to suggest the devs were scammers. But I still believe the ecosystem as a whole reeks of pyramids and other scams and I am sick of reading about it. I also think Scientology and MLM are scams but th

Linode compromised! That is important news that concerns me. If the headline didn't mention the BitCoin scam that HN is always pumping would it have made it to the front page? Certainly haven't heard anything from Linode :-(

China is lifting itself out of poverty and they aim to be the most powerful country in the world, not a cheap labour factory. Meanwhile the US is a rich developed country with over 2 million slave labourers (prisoners) living in dormitories
