The first problem is actually not a problem but one of the reasons DLLs are better: private by default reduce linking problems. The second problem has got nothing to do with DLLs and everything to do with the fact that there is no C++ ABI.

That's what I was telling you. A lot of people use MapReduce for simple search tasks, hence my remark.

Thanks for your answer. My point was exactly what you're implying: wouldn't it be cheaper to insert the data into an ad hoc "database" instead of using Hadoop?

Indexing can be done on the fly, when adding or modifying entries.

I have a naive question regarding MapReduce. I tend to observe that MapReduce is often used to do "search requests" that would be more easily answered with indexes. Am I missing something?

post hoc ergo propter hoc Religion is in the chain of events, but it's just a carrier. That's why I think it's not about religion but totally related to the political tensions. They just needed an excuse to take violent actions. It could ha

Your analysis is superficial. Religion is used as a tool for power. It's just an excuse.

The downward spiral feeling comes from after reading HN for a while, you start to reread the same articles and same comments. It does not mean HN gets worse and worse, it means you extract less and less value.

There might also be the fact that OS X and Windows are more than decent desktop OSes and competing with them is not easy.

You can't remove jams by adding a new process to report problems... If you want to remove jams, just make sure decisions are taken as low as possible in the hierarchy.

This patch brings back good memories. Memories when I was a child and I had to run various "patches" or "resident programs" to run games. Oddly enough they were phrased similarly and shared that same, excessive, punctuation. Will the next P

Sorry, I think my point wasn't properly explained. My point is that intelligence isn't everything. An AI may become more "intelligent" than a human being, but it doesn't mean any singularity will happen. It does not mean it can self-improve

Great article. I've always found the concept of singularity naive. Greatest discoveries haven't been done by the most intelligent persons. Science isn't just a question of intelligence or will, it's also a question of timing, luck and durat

There is a mandatory amount of self-derision to be used with that kind of term, I agree. Stars can really boost a team morale if they have the right amount of ego.
