The blackout scheme is a very secondary thing. If you make interval 1 hour, then the rapid response advantage only applies to data made available in the seconds before the trading event. Rather than having a millisecond advantage on every

I don't understand. So you can make side bets in real time with others who choose to do so. The point is that those who choose not to do so don't have to compete on millisecond scale response times to news postings.

Why don't we just have turn based trading with turns of 1 or 24 hours and then have a blackout period near turn ends when relevant information should not be divulged?

This is ridiculous. The real maps in these games didn't include even a hint of this kind of branching nonsense, so this kind of result says nothing about the actual difficulty of these games. And yet I sadly suspect "Zelda is NPC" is now

I can understand vegetarians who boycott meat because the animals are being treated inhumanely in captivity. But in my ethics, killing an animal quickly isn't inhumane. It's not like the other cows sit around all day worried about whether

Ah, I see what happened. You responded to my initial comment with: > Firstly, although it is proven that there is an optimal (game theoretic) strategy to play (Nash) [...] The reference to Nash here made me think you were claiming ther

I'm not sure which part of my post this refutes. Nash equilibrium isn't an optimum in the same sense that there is an optimum in the two player game. If you're playing the Nash strategy and everyone else isn't, you can still lose. But the

I'm not an expert, but I believe the difficulty with Texas Hold'em is modeling the other human players. "Heads up", where there is an optimal strategy, is essentially solved.

Black box abstractions that allocate memory are a problem. Presently, if you want to prove you will not run out of memory, you do it by not allocating memory or using a special purpose allocator.

Olympiad programs are pure algorithms, which I agree are more math intensive than most "normal" programming done today (though I wouldn't dismiss math as "riddles"). But that's my whole point: most problem domains have some mathy parts, wh

Does not follow. Holding stuff in our heads is not the only bottleneck in programming. For example, it's not the bottleneck when solving almost any Olympiad style problem, and yet those exams seem to do a good job of stratifying people.
