It used to be considered polite to append "(pdf warning)" to direct links to PDFs. I still like it, even though it's way less of a PITA now than it used to be.

I'm pretty sure every company I've ever worked at has been in the middle of trying to fix their document management & sharing. It's all sucked. The overall best knowledge-base I've ever used has been... Slack :-( Ema

Yeah, sorry, didn't mean to dismiss your post with such a short response. It does give good insight into the Hiring Mind, for those who may not have been there.

It may be infeasible for a number of reasons, but this post makes me wonder whether it'd be worth asking candidates how they'd like to be interviewed , then doing that.

I had to train myself to read way slower to appreciate good books. Then I had to train myself to read fast again to be able to keep reading less-good books. Seriously.

I think you can get away with a little of that, but you've gotta read the room a bit and have answers for some of it, and without prepping some fiction-loosely-based-in-reality ahead of time, I definitely do not. If everything's

I think I had that exact one once early on. I did actually get an "if you could go back in time a couple years, what advice would you give yourself?" a little while ago, which 1) threw me, because I wasn't expecting much of t

Good call, coming on to a Rails project that's been upgraded—or worse upgraded twice —is... usually very unpleasant.

Depends on the area. My part of the Midwestern US, it wouldn't be weird for a woman to address a group comprising only women as "you guys" or similar. There's some subtlety, though, because "the guys" or "

Management is still normal labor. The emotional part would be putting on a meaner or nicer face than you otherwise would to get a result for the job. It's acting.

What's it... for? If my MacBook's closed and it hasn't been, like, several days, the answer to "how much charge does it have?" is "about what it had when you closed it".

At a glance, it looks like both have mandates of some sort that keep states/countries from going full-on free rider, which is what I expected.

More important is that states can’t control immigration and cross-border trade, making a variety of policies infeasible or much more expensive, compared with the same implemented nationwide.

The Dead Homer Society's take on it is basically exactly that—the show became what it was satirizing. Throw in a little TV-embraces-criticism-and-makes-it-the-new-normal (cf. David Foster Wallace) and everything else got more like The

The real problem is the money to pay for it all. Most authors can’t afford to gamble four or five figures editing, proofreading, promoting, and distributing a book that may show nearly zero return. Think of publishers as VC for books.
