Solid upvote and the map analogy is great. I think this is a very important point. We often think of a 'program' as a flat blog of text, but we really should have tools to explore various projections of both static and dynamic con

Forgot to mention some related project which falls into the 'clusters of VMs' running actors idea and might be interesting: https://dotnet.github.io/orleans/ and https://github.com/SpaceTime-I

Right - I think good ideas in Smalltalk are messaging (~actors) and the liveness. But the usual ST model is too 'flat' - all objects and classes live in the same space. This could be extended such that each object is a space in it

Do you think it might be possible to integrate non-FRP style programs (basically stateful, imperative style) by running them in a VM which can isolate the effects and snapshot/restore the entire system state? In theory at least, it see

This looks fantastic. The model appears very clean and different than Jupyter in many ways: - cells can have names (it seems each cell can only export one name that is visible to the rest of the notebook) - dependent cells auto-update when

I wasn't thinking about another data storage system but more about what core abstractions should be provided by an OS? For example, could the Erlang model be an OS? Say the OS provides a namespace for a constellation of communicating p

Anyone else feel that a hierarchical 'bytearray' file system isn't really a great base for organizing an operating system? Some limitations are that you have to share everything as 'sequence of bytes', requiring eve

The big assumption you are making is that we have already found all the 'algebra and calculus' models - i.e. the good mental tools - in computing. You could do division in roman numerals and perhaps people even then justified it w

Yeah Haiku is definitely interesting and I'll take another look. I think the datatypes concept (originally from AmigaOS, and I assume also in Haiku?) is very powerful and mainstream operating systems haven't caught up yet. I am al

I think you've hit the nail on the head here. I would even take this thought further and say people want the features of the apps - but not necessarily segregated into distinct apps. Consider how poor the composition of various apps is
