How am I wrong? If I'm wrong it's that even more vague what a PBC needs to legally do to support its public cause, but in reality many PBCs end up with donating a certain % of their profits. But my understanding is that there are

You are right that it's not specifically required do donate a certain percentage of your profits. It's even more vague than that. It basically just means that you need to commit to a certain "public benefit" in your cert

No, the fact that it's a PBC does not necessarily limit the right of their investors. PBC just means that they need to commit a certain percentage of their profit to a cause. It's still a for-profit company owned by shareholders.

It's not about deserving. It's about the fact that once a company grows so dominant, that they will undoubtedly exploit their position of power. Which is bad for innovation, bad for the consumers and so on.

In the short-term, yes. In the long-term, I hope not. You are probably right, but I want to keep supporting initiatives like ActivityPub and hope that when Bluesky fucks up, Mastodon and other services are still around.

They have done everything to have the appearance of an open protocol and use that as a competitive advantage against incumbents. However, if you look at the reality, it's a very centralized service run by the same company which control

The issues you describe are integral parts of decentralized protocols, and they can't be solved by technology. The reason Bluesky does not have these problems is because they are de facto centralized. No confusion of choosing servers i

You can host your personal data, but as long as Bluesky Social, PBC is running the main Relay and AppView, and there's no easy way for Relays to talk to each other (like e.g. it works in Mastodon), they are in reality a centralized ser

Sadly, this is not true under neoliberal capitalism. With the correct oversimplified messaging and a lot of money, you can influence a lot of people to behave a certain way.

For a VC-backed company, this will never ever generate enough revenue growth. So, the real answer is: "If all goes well, we will keep raising VC money and get acquired and shutdown / butchered in 5-10 years". Like Bluesky, th
