I know a couple firefighters in the bay area and they definitely game this system. They'll work a typical salaried position for ~30 years, and then in their last year (or last couple years) they'll stuff as much overtime as they p

The use of the term "meltdown" seems disingenuous when discussing a molten reactor. If most of the fuel is already molten, and the shutdown procedure is to cut power (matching a power loss scenario) which means a plug melts to all

I was hired pretty quickly and easily with no degree. A degree from a prestigious four year college certainly doesn't hurt, but it's definitely not a requirement.

You could use the certificates to get in the door and use tuition assistance from the company to round yourself out. Google pays 2/3 for job-related coursework, 1/3 for personal improvement classes.

Not just wilderness or undeveloped, but highly inaccessible to firefighting crews. The Bay Area has peaks over 4000 feet with lots of fairly sheer areas. Often firefighters have to be dropped in by helicopter. Florida is mostly low rolling

The explanation that makes it more visceral for me is to increase the number of doors: - You pick a door (let's say 17) - I open 98 doors (let's say 1 - 16, 18 - 78, and 80 - 100) - Only doors 17 and 79 are still closed

I separated the cost issue so it wasn't lost in the other wall of text. I use a DCFSA ( https://www.fsafeds.com/explore/dcfsa ) to pay for it. Au pair expenses are a valid expense for this. Our marginal income tax r

This is actually our 10th au pair, so we've had a wide variety of experiences. Some good. Some bad. The cost and contractual obligations are easy. Agency fees are usually around $9000 for a year for a brand new au pair (it's cheap
