Even being able to use that assembly source as listed is not a guarantee. There's no standard macro language, even if two assemblers share most of their syntax. As other posts have said, binary compatibility is more important.

Cycle-counting is useless on modern workstations, since different processor are used in each. I don't see how the choice of language is significant either, as long as it meets your goals for responsiveness. Goal could be instead to lim

The IBM PC would have had a slower start—having an easy path for CP/M devs to become DOS devs meant there were robust offerings early in the 5150's life. The move to out-of-order 68000 CPUs was harder than for x86. 68k is self-con

Clavicord was definitely the virtuoso instrument of the period. It allowed for a lot of control, more than a modern piano. Its biggest issue, lack of sound, made it great for students like the ones Bach addressed in Clavier .

Nvidia drivers, signed kernel modules, and Nvidia signed kernel modules are my own most common sources of 'Linux evenings.' SecureBoot is quite possible on Linux until you need to reach for these, then it becomes a headache.

Commenting on all of the Trilogy will be quite a task. By the end of Blue Mars it wasn't just the characters who needed a memory refresh, it was me too. The books do have quite a bit to say, especially in the later sections when they b

Using it as slide text isn't so bad. Placing parts of code, like as[i] in it, is pretty silly though. My personal preference for a typeface that gives off the feeling of handwriting is an italic one. Palatino's italic bold is quit

If we're being nitpicky, did TUIs even exist on V7? IIRC, support for terminals that did more than scroll downwards was lacking in Unix at the time, only really starting on BSD.

To me, the nested format of comments is the issue. In a flat format like a forum, people are forced to stay on a main line of conversation, with occasional tangents using quotes or new threads. In the HN style, everyone peels away into thei

This gives the same feeling as AssemblyScript: it says it is one language, up to the point it isn't. That may make it easier for some people, but feels so uncertain. Both have a very slim set of articles in place of a proper manual; th

Or you could write an email? I don't see how that works at all, you'd still be sitting in silence for minutes while the response loops around.

Not quite the point. The rest of the book's text has that same fever-dream inventiveness, and you can't just have the book narrated to an audience. All of the book's style is lost or altered in the new medium.

Oops! Less memorable than I thought. Its concept is, at least: it's close to being the villain of the story, Case its hapless pawn, yet it's also a captive. There are some parts of the plot I do like, even if it's not a draw

A film adaptation of Neuromancer loses my favorite part of it, the writing. The most famous part of the book is its opening line: 'The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.' It feels more like re
