"In case X, do Y". You can make that pretty terse with clever pattern matching, in term of amount of keystrokes typed, but someone will always come in and feel they can save even more keystrokes by not handling all of the cases.

I really like the idea of "sound" programming languages. Elm is a great example of a reasonably simple, very sound programming language that force you to handle all cases (short of a compiler bug, hardware failure, or an explicit

I was raised in the residential neighborhood of a suburb...unless you're in a village where your neighbor is 300 feet away, if it's not the subwoofer, it's the kids screaming around the pool. If it's not that, it's

in addition to that, in urban areas you have to deal with quiet hours usually being 11pm to 7am, and they're rarely respected. Hard to sleep in when the beeping backing trucks start at 6am and the jack hammers start at 6:30, and you ca

Was pretty funny when we argued it. I explained http verbs to them after being told it was "THE REST STANDARD (TM)", and when I linked to them the http verb definitions, the reply I got was "Oh, I guess they must have changed

How would you do a endpoint that creates, for example, a new resource? Like, if I have a todo list and I want 2 todo items with the same text. My create todo endpoint will have to be non-idempotent. That's what the semantics of a POST

not nearly as bad, but I've worked at a company that tried really hard to be as pure REST as possible, closely following the http semantics for everything... except they used POST for idempotent actions and PUT for the non-idempotent o

Not just skills, but connections as well as the willingness to essentially leave their normal life behind. Honestly, the skills are the easy part, which is why a lot of people see what they do and think "Welp, I could do this too!"

Feels a bit weird saying this, but the "problem" (I use the term loosely) is how lots of people don't care about money. As companies like Google are currently learning. When you have thousands of employees who don't give

Biological clock aside, the kids might not be able to sleep earlier. Can't go to sleep before 7 if the jack hammers are going on until 7, for example.

No. My point is that I'm every bit of society we consider sleep as something you can cut as opposed to something critical. Yes my examples were different, but they have the same root cause: quality of sleep isn't considered a big

I don't have anything backing this up, buty personal experience is that NIMBY is partly because of the lack of proper building code. People are TERRIFIED of neighbor noise, most of which could be dealt with with better insulation.

I'll push this one step further: why is our entire society built around the idea that sleep literally doesn't matter? - Elementary school starting so early all the kids are half asleep in class. - College + Sleep? Not gonna happen

Not sure how that would help. Anyone can publish anything to npm, it doesn't even need a repository. So unless the source code itself was hosted on npm, and the entire toolchain was controlled by npm, there's not much to do.

When React was new and compilers/tooling wasn't that good it was pretty common to use it without JSX. JSX is pervasive because the tooling is now first class (and you'll need it if you make a non-trivial app sooner or later..
