Based on the Legal policy update a while ago[1].They should be planning to do much more than social features. I (personally) expect something like the We Chat model. [1]: https://www.whatsapp.com/legal/#terms-of-service

I think this would make a lot of sense on platforms that undergo massive fragmentation(all fingers pointing at android here). Browsers are also fragmented , but websites like Can I Use It[1] should be able to reduce the problem to a managea

They have a native(if electron can be called native) App now for mac. I agree with the latency and performance issues though. The Slack app practically freezes on changing network or if you wake you mac from sleep.
