It's a pleasure, Tom! May I call you Tom?

Didn't mean it that way - and for that I apologize. I was just expecting a lot more since it was on the front page.

Exactly. And I don't mind this being on the HN front page, but I'd like to see some proper Homelab setups here. Maybe someone can post the coolest setup they've seen so far?

This is extremely light - not a bad setup, but I mean.. it's like 1% of typical Homelabs.

Great idea. You should maybe have a kind of "I swear on the Quran" prefix to the question on how often you read the Quran? That way the user is reminded not to bluff in a weak moment.

Honestly though, a hiss that you can hardly notice is maybe technically tinnitus, but not a problem at all. Actual tinnitus would drive anyone crazy, I bet.

A lot of people hear a slight hiss. Is that tinnitus? Faint enough that it's not noticable 90% of the time.

You could literally have made exactly the same argument about the moon landing in 1969! And people actually did, some were truly against it. Way too expensive, near impossible, lethal, pointless, all the arguments were used.

Amazing how little enthusiasm for the future there is on HN these days. If things seem hard or impossible to do, there's no reason to stop trying.

I get that he's making points, but it's not clear at all that it's not worth trying. His argument is basically that we don't try.

It's typical fear mongering "this isn't possible because of reasons X, Y, Z". We haven't even tried it yet, or much space travel at all. It's way to soon to jump to conclusions.

Vouched. Not sure why you got flagged. This is a great book, should be interesting to see what the 4th edition is about and what changed.

I think most of it is just bad hardware, not specifically the RAM. Been using non-ECC desktop and laptop hardware for decades and I can't remember the machine crashing for .. I don't know, but a LONG time.

Not to defend Trump but I think what he meant was "no wind farms to speak of". Meaning that they're not investing heavily in wind, but rather in solar and existing coal. What he's wrong about is that they're not sta

On Tahoe, I upgraded only recently (maybe they made fixes after the initial complaints). Haven't noticed any regressions except for the weird corners but those I'm already used to. Super fast.

My problem with TTS is that I've been struggling to find models that support less common use cases like mixed bilingual Spanish/English and also in non-ideal audio conditions. Still haven't found anything great, to be honest.

I highly doubt Apple is currently paying market RAM prices. Their orders have been placed years ago.

Tons of 8GB users out there who are happy. I'm on 16GB and its definitely enough for a power user - and running multiple coding environments, Docker, IDE's. MacOS is really good with caching.

I'm on a MacBook Pro (M2 Pro) with only 16GB RAM. I mean, I'm running 4 different JetBrains IDE's, 3-4 docker containers, Chrome, Mail, terminals, and a bunch of other stuff and it's never laggy (almost feels like magic

It's like the Netbook is back, but done well. This is really exciting, I have to admit. Superb execution of hardware of course, but the secret sauce is the OS. Can't wait to try one.

Very cool that France also had their own national computer industry. In Norway, there was Norsk Data. It was private but had lots of government contracts. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norsk_Data

I've got a M2 Pro from 3 years ago and battery is still so good I can go to a whole day of meetings and not even need to bring my charger. Then I can probably work all night as well without plugging it in. Battery time is insane. Unles

RAM isn't just RAM though. Unified memory on Apple Silicon provides significantly better memory management and efficiency compared to trad RAM
