Thanks swombat. I think we agree - it was simply my implication that this was "The one way". I'll be careful about that.

Sorry if it felt a bit vapid. I actually thought of writing it when I heard the interview on political diaries, and felt it matched very well with what I found was interesting for startup and business blogs as well. I had been procrastinati

Hey swombat, I definitely respect your opinion, so let me see if I can explain myself a bit more - and hopefully improve myself in the process. By hindsight view, I meant retroactively analyzing everything after the adrenalin of the moment

That's a very good point. Personally, when I saw this (about two hours after we opened it up), I assumed it was a prank. There were two choices - delete it, and it goes away, no harm done, but nothing gained. Or try to turn it to our advant

I think you're right, but gfodor is right as well. The goal is to get good content, and we have to remove anything that stands in the way. It's just a matter of prioritizing and focusing your energy on the right area. That seems to be one o

We'll, I've noticed that Ask HN often times comes across as "critique our design". Which is fine enough; we have tons to learn on that side. And if being responsive means tweaking this minor things, it's no big deal. We're working on ways t

Paging - We just launched two hours ago, so just a few questions. Content will of course be our Achilles heel, but we're thinking of ways around this right now. Using a blog seems like a fair enough suggestion, but this should grow in a pre

Fixed the typo, thank you very much. We'll put the forms through a major redesign - after the green for votes, that seems to be the second main complaint.

Thanks for your feedback - we'll make sure everything is consistent in the next couple of minutes (or so I hope!) Design gripe noted. It's an interesting point about content, perhaps we should revert back to some "closed beta" system while

Fair question. We don't see much revenue coming from this, it's just the first part that we wanted to open up for public use. As we develop the community and site, we have some plans for monetization, certainly. For the time being, we're co

Well, for the spam, we'll work on it manually for the time being. We want to make it as easy as possible to join in at first, kind of zero barriers-of-entry (would you have posted a reply without having to make an account? What if you got t

Thanks, and upvoted. 1.) The point about green being distracting is a great point, something we hadn't thought of. We're working on implementing a gray-to-green bit that corresponds to points (similar to hn) and just stuck it at green for n

http://news.ycombinator.com/user?id=evbart There's been considerable discussion on this already. If you feel that it's worth the chance to pitch for the amount they charge, take it. If not, don't. I think it's a bit opportunistic - there'

tptacek makes a good point, as do you ryan. I suppose I had assumed we were the target for this post, not "the average consumer". If I was right, I think my point stands. If not, tptacek's likely right, though perhaps it may lay the seeds o

Perhaps you could elaborate on that a bit more, and offer a bit more insight than a snarky one liner. Why would new management be nice? What change would it bring?

Yes, this article is written, it seems, with a bit of a vengeance. I'm not sure where "Go ahead, California, make my day." comes from... There are some relevant points, but they're all contentious. California is in some dire straights, it's

Meh, not much substance here. A bit of marketing speak, "razor-focused" etc. I wouldn't mind some details about how they excel, why they built those features in, when they realized each feature was the next critical step, etc. That would ma

Overall, not a bad deal for TC, I'd say. Checking on the twitter stream shows that there's a lot of RT of this headline - which will only serve to spread TC's name around. It may be bad in the long run, but they may be able to issue some mu

Github stands as one of the more inspirational companies. Their model - business/customer services/innovation - can be applied to a few other markets as well. I definitely wish them luck, as an avid user (though only at the $7/month level).

It would be a fantastic hack if they were using some cool algorithms/machine learning to separate the sounds, analyzing their timing, then dynamically generating the animation from that. I would be genuinely interested in discussing that. B
