Just a small correction (I'm a Microsoft employee). I've played on Project Natal, and (pardon my french) it's pretty fucking awesome. You've got to see it to believe it. Can't say when it will ship (not sure if they announced that date yet)

So I work at Microsoft. Specifically on the Windows team. I honestly can't say I've ever had any issues using my iPhone or MacBook Pro there. During my interview we joked about how I had not used Windows (or any Microsoft product) in a seri

I had the good fortune of working under Franz on the translation team when I was at Google. Brilliant guy, but also one of the funniest bastards I've ever met. Great guy to grab a drink with if you ever get an opportunity.

The first few days of the contest were dominated by higher level languages (iirc Python help the top spot for a little). The forums were filled with people talking about their approaches, and there was a ton of rapid prototyping. Once the a

This is just a way to call a function and run it on a different server(s). You still have to design your program to handle parallelism.

Linux doesn't need to be any more mainstream than it already is. Coding for open source projects is fun because we can forget about formalities and pissing contests.

Yea, I became a fan of FB engineering hoping to talk about their distributed systems and what not. Turns out well over 99% of the fans are simply there to complain about something on facebook thinking an engineer will fix it. None of them k

It's heavily inspired by the Zune interface, which is surprisingly a great experience.

I quit working at a huge defense contractor last year (perhaps the largest in the world?), it's a big one... you know it. Some of the nonsense that they had going on included but was not limited to charging the government $150/hr at a rate

I am entirely okay with everything they've done. People need to stop overreacting. They hand held me through the whole Buzz process and all of the defaults were great. All of my non-technical friends also love it. They made it very easy for

Hey there, there are a few things the author got wrong but the KB will be KB971033. I work on Windows Update, so can't really comment on anything else about it... but if you want to keep an eye out for it, that's the KB to look for. Anythin

Ah, see there's the confusion. Dryad has been used internally since day one, I didn't even know you could get it outside of Microsoft. I don't think it was initially intended to be a commercial project, but more of a "We do billions of proc

Sorry, should have qualified 'discussing'. By the time Microsoft started talking about it, they had a functioning system. The turn around was pretty damn quick. As far as innovation goes, read up on Dryad. They do a few pretty interesting t

Disclaimer: I work at Microsoft (but this is all my opinion). Dryad has been discussed publicly since around 2006 (iirc). Hadoop's earliest public release I can find is from 2007 (but I'm sure it was around before that). I just want to put

I was at Google in 2007, here's my take on it. The people that are working there aren't just the most brilliant in the world, they literally invented a good portion of the internet, computers, computer science, and programming as we know it

Why? Most phones other than the iPhone don't support true multi-touch and it hasn't been an issue for them. The only major use case where I've seen it be a problem is with games that have controls that need to be pushed at the same time. Do

They need a monopoly... which they are nowhere near having. Even then an AppStore isn't anti-competitive (if anything, it embraces and thrives on competition).

I'm sure there will be money in it... but a tablet is in no way anywhere close to the 'necessity' that a phone is. Everyone has a phone, and most people use their phone for a good majority of the day. It's easy for anyone from a teen to a g

I was personally hoping for a new user experience. I want a tablet like Microsoft's Courier prototype. It's a book, which can easily be held with one hand. You interact with it in fundamentally different ways than both a phone and a laptop.
