Yes. The White House has made this a very explicit part of their agenda since day one.

Definitely, I worry about this a lot. I do wonder about some of the close call stories that are out there. It seems like in its in Russia’s best interest to project an image that they are willing to launch without hesitation. So I wonder if

Check out galios, laid the foundations for two a whole fields of math and then died at age 20 in a duel.

I think it’s mostly a numbers game, more PhDs, roughly the same number of research position. This means most scientists don’t know most other scientists in their field, and so the metrics people use to select become more important. That and

ESL is an excellent reference, if you are looking for an introduction instead I can recommend “An introduction to statistical learning” by (most of?) the same authors.

Reviews seem like the biggest need. “The culture in the X department is terrible, everyone works 80 hours a week and is miserable” “Night life is great at least, the grad students usually go out for student nights at blah blah after seminar

Yeah I was playing devils advocate I guess, I do agree with you. The best equipped people to investigate the false alarms is probably the fire department itself, and they are already the ones doing the investigating.

Not necessarily what OP is proposing. It could be a group if people fielding calls to the department who rapidly investigate all calls, and get the fire department there for real fires. They could also provide some first responder care... m

Honestly not trying to be snarky. If what you quoted is the dog whistle, what is the decoded message that the in crowd would be hearing?

Yes but actual racists have since actually started using the symbol, which has the added advantage of them being able to laugh at the mainstream media, and for adding plausible deniability. Though certainly there are non explicitly racists

Speaking as someone else who does scientific computing all day, taking away vectorized operations would kill my performance completely.

Yes although I think most people equate the subjective being right with their beliefs being inline with the (supposedly) objective truth.

Not incompatible to view belief as an optimization while also realizing our measurement of the truth function is biased and noisy (with everyone measuring getting different biases).

Of course! I meant my comment to be tongue in cheek, but saying that some numbers are uncomputable is not incompatible with symbolic math on a computer. Note that for example Pi is computable, despite having an infinite decimal expansion.

This bothers me to no end too. But I’ve given up in every trying to fix it, it’s entered the public lexicon, if you want to talk about actual exponential growth you need to be more specific now.
