“This is water” has to be one of my favorite short essays/speeches of all time. If you haven’t read it/seen it before so yourself a favor and go through it, it doesn’t take very long. Seriously wish I could get these ideas into ev

Yeah it’s really hard to correct the perspective to the truth though if all you have is social media. Honestly I’ve been putting less and less trust in almost all my sources of knowledge recently.

That’s a good point, for me it’s more that I perceive that the quality of Apple quality control used to be very high, and now it’s coming down to earth. It’s this shift that has people upset I think not the fact that Apple products have mor

That’s true, but it seems like this issue doesn’t affect all MacBooks? And looking at the reddit thread someone posted here it does look like the behavior wasn’t actually throttling properly.

I’m glad it was just a software bug. It still seems like Apple’s quality control has gone way done over the last few years. My hypothesis is that there has been a change in culture as the company gets bigger with less emphasis on rigorous t

The article made it seem like this only affected a small number of units? Their quality control probably doesn’t look at every single unit. Although it’s interesting that they didn’t find it at all, since reading HN and reddit gave me the i

People are rightfully pointing out that this is only part of the picture, however this is still a really important and useful result! CNNs came by mimicking the layout of a visual cortex, it's very possible other similar breakthroughs

I'm not even sure this counts as a scam, but I think it's relevant to what you're looking for. I found this ( https://www.amazon.com/Conditioner-Evaporative-Circulator-Hu... ) fan/humidifier and the review

It’s very interesting to speculate about all this, and also crazy to think all these predictions were only made in the last century. I wonder how much different this list will look in another 100 years (if at all).

Ironically what was supposed to be a feature is now something that needs to be fixed. I think really the value proposition here is “very little if any setup needed” and making so there was no setup possible may have gone too far.

I really like the mail client, since I have 5 different email addresses I use that would otherwise be difficult to coordinate by just forwarding everything to one gmail inbox. Also I big fan of the messages app, if you use an iPhone it’s ve

A robot being able to complain that something is very difficult for it (using more energy for something than it needs to for example) would be really cool!

Yup, the military has this exact same use case, I think that's where all the funding for Boston dynamics big dog (and probably others) came from in the first place.

It is very telling to me that very large animals that we would consider much less intelligent than a human (elephants, sperm whales) still have much larger brains than us. All that grey matter is needed for something! (not that all of it is

I think the hardware they are referring to is the physical arms/grippers, not the computers. In the field of robotics I'd say the hardware still has a lot of room for improvement, although I'd still say software is the bigger

Personally I think this is an over engineered phone case. I can see it either not deploying correctly every time or deploying on accident a lot. Still a cool idea but I’ll stick with a normal shell.

Interesting, I actually like the half arrow key thing, I often use the arrow key with my pinkie, makes it easy to switch between up and down. To each their own I guess.

I really think the high costs of making rail in the US is a logistical problem, not a technology one.

Disney popularized the myth, but I think it was around before them. I think they wanted to get video of those famous/interesting lemming suicides but the lemmings wouldn't do it, so they coerced them into it.

what exactly do you mean? Are you saying that RL requires less compute? I would say having an obscene amount of compute is definitely a big competitive advantage, especially over a lot of small academic research labs.

My guess is that the profit margin was too small to justify, and that furthermore they didn't want to cannibalize their own MacBook/iMac/whatever sales, since I am assuming all those have a much higher margin for apple compar

Understood, (Sorry commented before your edit). Interesting that you've actually seen complex enough cases to actually need a Karnaugh map, definitely one of the things I learned in class and proceeded to never use again.

I imagine it might be easier than you are thinking. I think it’s mostly a matter of mounting all the sensors (camera, lidar, laser), securing the main computer(s) somewhere, routing between everything. For the electronics I think most(all)

Cruise and their recent $2.2 billion investment was definitely mentioned. The article even claims them to be Waymo’s biggest competitor.
