What I like about put.io is that if somebody else already downloaded the same torrent, your download is instantaneous. Of course, you still have to download the file from put.io, which can itself takes ages (at least from here in Japan). I

Agreed, it's much better to adapt your grid to your content than pick a ratio first and then jam things in there.

Looks great! I actually had a very similar idea myself: http://talkbee.heroku.com/ Never really got it off the ground because I realized it was too complex of an idea for a single person. Two-sided marketplaces in general are hard, but es

Wow, I'm number 10! I don't know if I should be happy that people like my stuff, or scared that I've spent so much time submitting and commenting on Hacker News this year...

Agreed, but the problem is that a lot of young startups simply don't have those skills at all. So for the first hire, they can't afford to get someone inexperienced since there won't be anybody that can mentor them. Add to this the number o

From a logical standpoint this makes no sense at all, but it was still a fun mental experiment. I guess if this was true, innovation would go up when countries suck, thus leading to a better situation and less innovation, which means the co

I'm using WordPress. And just because I'm a designer doesn't mean I can't code :)

It pretty much looked like this, the only thing I added later was the filters and rankings.

The last meetup in Kyoto was a success, with about 30 people. Since this is the Kansai meetup, we're changing cities this month and going to Osaka (Juso to be exact). We'll have a bigger space so we're hoping to get even more people!

I created The Toolbox in about 10 hours ( http://thetoolbox.cc ). If you feel like a project will take more than 10 hours, I would suggest scaling your idea back. Of course, if you have more than 10 hours available then go for it, but a lot

If you've built side projects before, post them here! I'll start: - http://patternify.com – A pixel pattern generator that produces CSS Base64 code (made with jQuery) - http://thetoolbox.cc – A directory of useful web apps and tools (ma

Upvoting this just so more people have a chance to see it. Although judging from when I was there, I'm not sure if you guys really need even more members!

This is part 2 of me (Sacha Greif) and Nathan's podcast about eBook marketing. As usual, feel free to ask us questions. And here is a link to the HN discussion about part 1: http://news.ycombinator.org/item?id=4600394

Speaking for myself (Sacha), I raked in 10k a month the first month . That initial boost came mainly from HN. Sales dropped off dramatically since, and now it's probably more around $1-200/month, if that.

I didn't do that myself but I think it's a very valid strategy. The only problem I can see is that it might hurt your momentum: sometimes you just need to go ahead and write without having to wait for feedback or A/B test results for every

1. As a designer I don't have a specific focus, I work on web apps as much as iOS apps. Haven't worked on an Android app yet, though. 2. I haven't had anybody pirate by book as fas as I know. Maybe it's because of the low price point? That

This is a very hypocritical stance. I don't know what you do for a living, but assuming you're a programmer, aren't you "monetizing knowledge" every day? And you say there's "no need" to monetize this, but what about the need to put food on

I'm pretty good with technology compared to the average person (or at least, those whose job description does not consist of spending their whole lives in front of a computer), and even I managed to wipe out a lot of my iOS data when simply
