He's talking about accepting people's money to run Discourse for them. The software is open-source, so obviously anybody can set it up and use it themselves.

Yeah, some of the filters are cut off. The rest of the site works fine though.

Thanks! There's also http://www.agiledesigners.com/ , which I think is even better than The Toolbox. Although more design-oriented.

Very cool project! How did you compile your Sass code by the way?

I hate that language bar so much (I work on a lot of 100% JavaScript projects) that I installed Stylebot ( http://stylebot.me ) just to get rid of it.

That's what I've always heard as well. Same thing as Microsoft tolerating Windows piracy in China.

I find it frustrating that you basically have no chance of getting coverage on blogs unless you spend your life "building a relationship" with bloggers. Look, I don't want to "build a relationship". I want to build

I think his point was that he didn't do that, and sure enough he wasn't able to generate any intest around the paid version.

I'm not sure I agree about the "do not want to know" part. After 5 minutes with Git I don't see how anyone would want to stick with FTP… But yeah, the fact that WordPress hosting plays so badly with git is a big part of the reason why I pro

Drawing is certainly NOT a key foundation skill for learning design (at least if we're talking about designing websites and user interfaces). Certainly not on the same level as typography, for example. I think a good equivalent would be mat

I'm a designer, and I can't draw at all. I'm not saying learning to draw wouldn't improve my design skills, but it certainly doesn't seem like a practical way to start learning digital design.

Ignoring the "delete your portfolio" and "making $30k is great" parts (which I don't really agree with), for me the big takeaway here is having a more active approach to finding work. If you're struggling to find work as a freelance designe

That discussion is actually pretty stupid. It's funny to see how DN can be as biased as HN, except in the opposite direction…

Sorry if this is a little off-topic, but since you're working on a HN-like site I'd be curious to know if you gave Telescope ( http://telesc.pe ) a try? And if you did, what made you decide not to use it?

A basic understanding of JavaScript is enough. And whenever we use any funky js syntax (which doesn't happen a lot) we try to explain it.

Exactly. We used Middleman ( http://middlemanapp.com ) for the landing page and it worked great. All the data on the landing page comes from a few YAML page, and it even lets us auto-generate special pages for discount codes. I strongly rec

Right now Meteor is changing so fast that a paper edition didn't really make sense (the online edition will be kept up to date, of course). But once Meteor stabilizes at 1.0 we'll consider a printed version. And if we do this, we'll also pr
