If I want to use an extension that needs full permissions on sensitive websites, I just download it and install it manually after looking at the source code. I rarely have to update them, and I'm not worried about future injections at

Is there any political momentum to deal with this, for example allowing at least some level of endowments? I respect the purity of the ideal, but it sounds like it is backfiring right now.

I don't use Android swipe gestures but I presume they would work in FF too. Nonetheless, we should avoid posting "it works in Chrome" as an answer to anything. I have a deep-seated hatred for Chrome-only devs - not least of w

This specific case is about people who have no idea they are interested in the data today (likely because they don't yet know it exists), needing it for research tomorrow. It's about how we should go about archiving public data ra

Can somebody explain to me how backdooring every app does not lead to the real risk of an entire population's bank accounts being emptied, or similar more hidden but widespread attacks that absolutely cripple any country doing this? Al

Yes of course. I was trying to remain tangential to the current administration and stay on the level of the underlying problem they seem to intuit related to this one, very specific policy decision (hard to tell with them, that's for s

There used to be a much stronger push for education in the US. Perhaps if companies could not "just hire from overseas" or "just outsource" there would be a longer term growth strategy that would focus more on the educ

There have been several recent supply chain attacks that show attackers are taking advantage of this (previously sensible) mentality. So it is time to pivot and come up with better solutions before it spirals out of control.

It's at best a mixed bag which makes it harder to fine-tune apps on your system and with limited security benefits (which again become harder to improve yourself). https://madaidans-insecurities.github.io/linux.html#fla

That was what was insane to me. I expected a couple hundred mb each for my first couple of apps. Not a pleasure in itself, but I was blindsided by the 10gb. The apps were clearly also part of the problem - they should not have so many depen

Absolutely. I should have verified partition sizing, and I should never have allowed even one flatpak. That doesn't make Debian default sizes and installation process anywhere close to good.

I recently installed Debian 13 and went with the default partition sizes for /, /var, swap etc. I had two flatpaks installed and my entire /var partition was filled up with 10gb of flatpak data. Frankly very bad default parti

I am sure you are right, my physics class was my hardest class in HS, but I took it my senior year. Regardless, her school is science and tech focused, and it was a hard class without materials to study for tests, and with minimal guidance.

There is a thing called pedagogy, and biology > chemistry > physics is a perfectly healthy order of discovery. I am not sure why there needs to be a battle of the sexes in the middle of this.

Most schools do biology > chemistry > physics, which is from funnest and easiest to most technical and hardest (plus digging in to the building blocks of the previous class). Physics first is very much throwing them in at the deep end

That is more a "who is controlling access to hardware drivers matters" problem. I wouldn't be surprised if macOS was still a tiny bit more efficient with a level playing field, but we will never know.

The OS matters, and I would guess you were using two different OSes? I have no doubt macOS running on an m1 is more optimized than whatever you were using on the ryzen. I recently had to remove Windows completely from a few years old laptop

It seems like it would be relatively straightforward to make an sqlite based file format and just have users add a plugin if for some reason they couldn't upgrade their older version of LibreOffice etc. I agree with the other commenter
