How do they escape the reality that the Earth will one day be destroyed, and that it's almost certainly impossible to ever colonize another planetary system? Just suicide out?

The problem with effective altruism is the same as that with most liberal (in the American sense) causes. Namely, they ignore second-order effects and essentially don't believe in the invisible hand of the market. So, they herald the b

I substantially prefer the term "Emancipation Day," as it gets the point across more clearly. Lots of people don't know what "Juneteenth" means, since it's not a real word.

I was interested in making an open-source version of strava, so along the same lines. I hate how strava blocks so many features if you don't pay. The idea was to make a lichess to strava's chess.com. I'm just not sure if ther

According to this other thread posted on HN today, the issue isn't AI, but the end of zirp. Some even argue that AI and GenAI coding is all just hype: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44136117 Of course, I think th

I literally am in the process of firing someone who we no longer need because of efficiencies tied to GenAI. I work at a top-10 tech company. So, there you go. That's one job.

You're right, of course. Most of this thread is some sort of weird motivated reasoning by people who are terrified of the reality of what lies ahead. I work at a top-10 tech company. We've stopped hiring junior talent, and it'

Clean up the crisis, yes. Destroy the future of the US economy by endorsing ZIRP and massive government spending for more than a decade? No. People give Obama a pass when they shouldn't. This stuff didn't start with Trump. The pro

Oh? Then how do you explain massively increased adoption of such technologies right after the financial crisis? You're assuming the world works the way people say it does in a business textbook. The real world is messy, and people don&

Yeah, I mean people love playing political games with this stuff. But the actual crime was what happened between 2009-2012. Trump is just a symptom. Yes, he's a bad guy, but what do you expect people to do?

I strongly disagree with this point. History shows that most companies don't deploy cost-reduction technologies until forced to by economic conditions. When there's a recession, deployment of AI will be next level.

My opinion on this is that the damage has already been done. Successive administrations have already loaded up debt massively and participated in a Ponzi scheme with the Fed to pretend asset valuations in the US make sense. Sooner or later

In basically every other era of investing since 1930, you would probably have benefitted from that approach. While I think you're right to set aside the prudence you were targeting in favor of a passive investment approach, I also thin
