Just cross your fingers and hope for the best if your data is at any point decoded by a json library that doesn’t support bigints? Python’s ability to handle them is beside the point of they get mangled into ieee754 doubles along the way.

Oh no! Just when I was finally getting it out of my system, there’s a remake! Cruel. I wonder if you can still get units with negative numbers of figures in them when lionheart wears off. Maybe I need to buy it and find out.

Back in college, I would listen to AM radio while I worked on my computer. The radio would pick up electrical noise from the keyboard and the mechanical mouse. I wonder if this sounds anything like it.

Where are these people who use Matlab properly? All I ever see in other people’s Matlab code is for loops. Their idea of speeding up their code is using parfor. Obligatory licensing rant: you have to pay extra to use parfor, as I found out

There is a middle school in my town that was built with no windows, in the 1970s. For this innovation, it won a design award. The roof leaks terribly.

I knew a man who had been in the Navy, in the Pacific, during WW2. Not many men of his generation had tattoos, but most of the ones who did were sailors, and he was no exception. Large tattoo on his forearm: a jester, with the hat and bells

A friend of mine is a volunteer fireman. Since the fire engine sits higher than just about anything, he can see what people are doing behind the wheel in their SUVs. I’d be shocked, he reports, to know just how many of them are absorbed in

I like to take the “programming as theory building” approach. Every program is an experiment. When it stops working, you have more information about the world. At that point, you can revise the program, or you can let it go. Either way, you

For me, the whole point of the resume is that the applicant has highlighted those parts of their experience they consider relevant. I then pick the points that look most interesting to me and go really deep in them in the interview. So, ok,

I think the Sicilian Expedition would have better served the point here. Cannae is a disaster, but the Republic bounces back. Syracuse was a point of no return for Athens.

Yeah, this was bad generalship, albeit on a much bigger scale than the Republic was used to. The Romans were no strangers to military disasters, but they were unusually resilient. The conquest of Italy was far from a sure thing, and it incl

This seems like the sort of thing that’s only going to work if you have great leadership. Which oxide has, no doubt. It takes a truly unusual leader to channel the ego into making something great for humanity. A lot of executives pay lip se

You see this with internal projects at larger companies too, just with fewer constraints. At big companies, the same impulse leads to empire building and vanity projects. Far too few people ask, “how does this deliver value for the company?

The world didn’t have enough json variants. I’m doing my part and inventing a new data interchange format. Don’t worry though, it’s not compatible with any of the others. Edit: in case this sounds like a piss take, I’m serious about it. My
