Ugh Google Now on my Pixel 3 was the last time I felt a genuine "wow" factor with tech. Everything since then has been between eye-rolling, uninteresting, or just worse.

If total invasion of privacy is the only way to make AI useful, then maybe it isn't useful?

I'd throw in the failure to do anything meaningful with home automation, which I guess could fall under the Siri umbrella of failure. Maybe I'm still peeved big tech bought up the industry just to kill any innovation.

I think this might only be true on Android? Apple has a strict policy that the basic app functionality must work even without permissions. And testing right now, I can send messages to direct numbers without having given access to my contac

People right here on HN were adamant my next house would be purchased using an NFT. And similar absurd claims about blockchain before that.

I think this has a lot more to do with time commitment. Once the problems take more than ~1 hour I tend to stop because I have stuff to do, like a job that already involves coding.

I'm genuinely curious about the unit economics on the expensive plans for each of these AI plays. It's common to parrot the idea companies are still losing money on them but hard to find actual evidence.

I am suspect that ads will be able to cover the cost of inference, much less model building, salaries, product development, etc. The ad industry is built upon _and priced for_ websites that return results for virtually zero cost. That isn&#

They should compete in the crucible of the free market. If prompt engineering is indeed a profitable industry then so be it. I for one am just tired of all things software being dominated by this hype funded AI frenzy.

That "bad leadership" dug AMD out of hole and transformed the company into a behemoth. From under $2 a share to around $250 in eight years. I'll invest in that kind of bad leadership all day everyday.

I really struggle to see a path where $.01 ad inventory covers the cost of inference, much less training or any other of OpenAI ventures. Unless every query makes you watch a 30 second unskippable video or something equally awful.

Huh? They have committed to about a trillion dollars in infrastructure build out they will need to pay for. How about instead of begging tax payers to back loans to pay for this, they actually produce some profit and pay for it themselves?

Heh, I submitted a complaint with Apple every day until they reverted those Safari tab styles. Awful design. There is something deeply broken inside Apple allowing these broken, awful designs get out.
