I was an early hire at a computational reproducibility startup for scientists [0]; the platform was basically an online frontend wrapped around a Docker container hosted on AWS, and the idea was that you'd put your code and data on th

The fact that the US did it first doesn’t make it reasonable. Both policies can be bad on their own terms, and either way, the costs will almost entirely be borne by people who had nothing to do with drafting the US policy in the first plac

I think rather than looking to theoretically arguments about this, we can just note how many putatively sophisticated actors have messed this up at some point and how costly it’s been for them. Mark Cuban, Prime Trust (we think) , and a who

this post opened my eyes to important context about 80s and 90s action movies. Watching them 10-20 years later, I often thought, how are there so many darn banks getting robbed? Turns out, ‘Heat’ is more realistic than I understood (at leas

I might get a graphics card if the crypto market collapses, but I wasn't planning to buy any BTC. Also, I think that if BTC falls below, say, 10K, a lot of loans are going to get called in suddenly, and we're going to see that a l

Good, I hope they dump it suddenly and without warning. The bitcoin trading market is much thinner than it looks -- wash trading is ubiquitous [0] and BTC's price is systematically propped up by a likely fraudulent stablecoin [1]. High

I bought a used carbon frame racing bike 10 years ago for $400 and have had zero issues with theft. If it were stolen tomorrow I’d still have gotten very good value from it ($40 a year). I live in NYC. Take care to leave it in high-traffic

Yep, this very much resonates with my experiences. At the end of the day, startups are run by people, who generally prefer to work with their friends, avoid conflict, etc. There's no great mystery. The mystery is when things work well.

In my dream world we would normalize things like eating on a zoom call. People gotta eat, it’s no big deal. Maybe if they’re audibly slurping soup that’s a problem in terms of noise, but that would also be a problem during a boardroom meet
