A slight complication to this solution is that the length of a year is not exactly divisible to seconds, or even of constant length. So counting seconds is fundamentally different from, though pretty close to, counting years.

Much more like Gattaca, in my opinion. Minority Report was about fate and crime, whereas Gattaca was about potential (and the implications for fate and crime).

I have a feeling that's a guy they met. Maybe a guide or speaker. Other common features were a man with a striped shirt, and possibly a woman who talked about her extramuros life. All of these have the same beard: http://ed.fnal.gov/projec

Switching when there is no effect is harmless, from the perspective of the product. It only hurts your takeaways, and if you're doing A/B, you're conceding that your previous takeaways weren't the final word anyway. Now, if switching is exp

One of the biggest reservations I initially had about abstraction, when learning programming, was that I didn't consider performance a detail. As such, I didn't litter my code with objects or pure functions even when they made conceptual se

I don't know, bureaucrats operate in packs. A single Vogon might be all you need to set the wheels in motion, and indeed might be more effective than touching on several distributed Vogons.

It doesn't hold for loads of things. 1 heap + 1 heap = 1 heap. 1 bunny + 1 bunny = 12 bunnies, depending on how fast you are with your observing. 1 dl of ethanol + 10 dl of water < 11 dl of diluted alcohol.

Your birthdate alone is something like 14 bits of information. I've never understood why some ask for it, and always tend to just make sure my age shows up as at least 18. And I would never put my zip code on anything purportedly anonymous.

This is implicit in having access to the (cumulative) key distribution. Still, the interpolation function can turn out to be pretty expensive, if your data isn't uniform 0-100.

After a bit of further thought, I realized that the triangular sectors aren't equilateral after just one iteration. The angles at the equator are 90°, and the polar angles are 180°/n - works when n=4. But then the four nested ones will be 3

No, that's just because P(X=x)*P(Y=y) = P(Z²=(x²+y²)). I think you could do a reasonable job by dividing first into two hemispheres, then into six(?) triangular sectors each, then recursively into four subsectors each. This would give log4(

How do you weigh the benefit of not killing unaware people against the benefit of not killing people? At least banana loaders know they're in some danger, and have probably analyzed the cost of that against the benefit of a larger pay.

I don't agree with that. Yes, most people interpret the word "random" as "uniformly distributed" or "unpredictable", depending on context ("pick a number at random" vs. "some random glitch"), but statisticians and mathematicians interpret i

Exactly. 3d6 is already pretty close, and it just gets closer and closer to the gaussian as you increase the number of dice. And it's bounded, too, so you get minimum and maximum values.

The problem with the standards is that getting copies costs actual money. If one really wants to start learning about databases, it can be very difficult to decide what to pay for. Implementation documentation, at least, is generally free.
