Please explain the proper way to form priors, then. 50:50 is widely used, as is "0 for obviously wrong stuff". The author here suggested "something sufficiently close to 0", which to me is indistinguishable from the second one. Should an ac

And to go the other way, it doen't happen like that because the rule of thumb isn't p=0.05, it's p<=0.05 - and p can be quite small indeed, if you run out of ideas before running out of data (such as might happen in a novel area).

Sounds reasonable. When some people find that their model doesn't quite fit, they make a more accurate model. Others make a less specific model. It's the difference between model parametrization and model selection. So when we get a dubious

Tolkien is dead and gone and made a comfortable existence on his work I'm sure. I wanted to check up on that, and found this: So far from losing money [as expected], sales so exceeded the break-even point as to make Tolkien regret that he

Good-looking mazes are not necessarily fun to wander in. The important bit in a maze is the topology, imho, with navigation coming in second (turns can be painful, thin walls can be misleading, corridors can be trivial, etc) and appearance

This is why I don't like self-study for mathematics. A lot of the stuff is very simple once you understand what it's for, but finding out what it's for from the formal definition is an uphill battle. And then, after you see the thing for wh

So how do you get it to add? Specifically, what representation of arbitrary numbers are we using with our finite automaton? Infinite read-only tape plus infinite write-only tape for output, in base 10? If so, it should be simple to do multi

If you look at a Jefferson, da Vinci, Jobs – they shipped. A lot. I don't think that's quite true. Leonardo was known to miss deadlines and abandon works; perhaps a better approach would be looking at how confident they were of their abil

The chart for the weekend specifically has just a few red points, which has shifted the range. Removing them would make the range better, but that's not really worth the time. What do you mean by this? Are you normalizing before col

For those watching at home, 100k from 13k in 92 years would mean 2.24% annually, 500k 4.05% and 1M 4.83%. I agree that over 5% is optimistic, but 3% for the century might be achievable. Note, though, the given that the rate of growth isn't

It's a lot harder to automate abuse of a random person's semistructured data without metadata than it is to automate abuse of a random person's twitter account. Sure, it's also more lucrative, but I wouldn't worry about it for a couple more

Here's a thought: Archimedes's approximation approaches the target. That is, the perimeter of each subsequent approximation is closer to that of the circle than all that came before. The side of a regular polygon is √(sin²(τ/n)+(1−cos(τ/n))

I'm pretty sure I don't agree. Many of the fundamental assumptions in economics aren't just first-order approximations; they're about tractability. You can leave out friction and get reliable ballpark figures, but when you assume monotonici

I disagree. I'd put that probability at 0 after n=7. In fact, according to the recent reddit thread, some test designers are encouraged to enforce equal proportions of each option. While stupid, it lowers the threshold to n=3 or so.
