There are no small amount of times when you'd want to wrap a block with links, including headers, summaries, and composites. It's actually unfortunate that in so many cases where people wrap blocks with anchors, they go for the inner-wrap m

JPEG artifacts are separate from the definition of a pixel, yes, but not to the extent you propose. The artifacts are specifically a result of pixels becoming corrupted during the compress-decompress cycle, and feature most prominently wher

Fair enough wrt/ point samples. But I didn't see his point as being that; I saw him arguing that pixels are correctly interpreted as representing an area of zero, which is very convenient when you're fitting a function to interpolate betwee

Excellent video, though I do wonder about the treatment of pixels as point samples. I've seen it before, and it appears to be a popular viewpoint among code designers, but it doesn't agree with how I use and create pixels, or with my unders

To be frank, he got the mechanism, the scope and the barrel from a store. What he actually built was the scaffolding, which is still nice but more like assembling or repairing an AK than building one.

I checked the link to The Straight Dope about the reading comprehension tests they had conducted; turns out they hadn't conducted one at all. So I guess the author didn't read slow enough before writing.

I wouldn't call smoothstep an approximation to a sinusoid - both are sigmoidal, but that's about it. This smoothstep in particular is just a natural cubic spline interpolator, arguably the simplest sigmoidal interpolating function.

Regarding Alexa and Compate, you're half right. They're wrong in useful ways, but not the way you suggest. What's important to realize is why they're wrong - sampling bias. So they give an accurate representation of a certain demographic, b

It doesn't. A dead person is effectively immune, that is "recovered". Popular modifications that do affect the model include temporary immunity and new births.

It's worth noting that Watson didn't beat the Jeopardy grandmasters with accuracy, but with speed - not that that isn't useful in healthcare, given sufficient accuracy.

I must disagree. Without the top navigation visible, removing the outer box is clearly a good idea. And splitting the bottom section instead of subsetting it looks better and is reasonable, but in my opinion is less usable . Allow me to cl

Personally I hate the minimalist fad, and this is speaking as a minimalist. I want a UI that shows me information I need and exposes actions I can take. That means (relative) timestamps and quote buttons, not client devices and administrati

I think you underestimated the pixel counts. It's hard to be precise because of the bleeding, likely due to scaling, but adding one to the pixel counts results in a much more reasonable 0.294 sales per pixel. This would indicate the special

No, the left hand should not be squared. It's a special property of the Poisson process that applies to the numbers, not the units.

The entertainment market is another good example of what he might have been thinking of. Many games consoles and video devices have been sold at a loss, though it's obviously a greater gamble than selling payment plans disguised as service.

The problem with the ECDF is that it's harder to get a feel for, being cumulative. I spent a few days once playing with N-bin histograms, and still feel those should be the default (with non-compact ends, maybe gamma distributed) over smoot

You're underestimating the number of non-photographic JPEG files in use despite lacking transparency. It appears a significant number of people don't care about artifacts. That said, JPEG does today support lossless compression, if you real

GIFs are simpler, more widely supported, animated, and in many common cases result in smaller filesizes. But I believe the real reason they're still around is people don't want to fix what isn't broken. There are a lot of cases where PNGs a

The File API is still kind of poorly supported, but you could add that depending on your browser (though you'd want to use an extension, since it'd be a bit more code). As for live-editing HTML, that's usually been considered out of scope f

Some of the data seem a little suspect. The grade correlation result is unreasonably strong, and the bin sizes aren't specified, among other shortcomings. That said, this was a very entertaining read. edit: Appears to be from 1990.

It's not only the textures that's the problem. Wine's app tracker reports that in 2010, Saints Row 2 would crash on launch. It's possible it runs now, but that doesn't leave Saints Row 3 with a good outlook.
