Just because their authors say that doesn't mean that it's true. Worse still, no corporation is willing to perform a patent search because such an activity could open a liability should it be discovered that something they already use is co

That patent is on NeXTSTEP's NSDistributedNotificationCenter [1], which admittedly might actually be enforceable (I'm not sure of any prior art in this regard). That said, after reading the claims of a lot of the other patents Apple is citi

I quite doubt Apple's going to attack Google directly. Their weird App Store rejections and now the HTC lawsuit (read, not Google) indicate that Apple prefers a passive-aggressive stance. If Apple sues Google, Google will stop paying Apple

There's also a perma-delete a couple of levels deep in the help system that will deactivate your account forever. (Like deactivation, it probably doesn't delete anything, though.)

No, because that one person, having placed thousands of connectors, is most likely better at the job than you or anyone you know. Also, these are connectors - it'd be obvious in testing if they didn't work.

Are you sure? Vista added something called Boot Configuration Data to replace Boot.ini. Not somewhere they needed backwards compatibility. At the very least, they could have designed/adopted a sane binary database format. But no, instead th

Normal Googlebot IP addresses resolve to names like crawl-blah.googlebot.com. These ones don't. You could use whois to detect them, but it's a lot slower than DNS. I guess that Google expects the SEO guys not to be smart enough to use somet

I think that part of the problem is that the Netscape plugin API only allows the plugin to draw when the browser explicitly allows it to. This is also the case on Windows, but for some reason it's much slower on the Mac. Switching to Core A

The people who push for anonymity are those who don't understand the Internet (or anything else, quite often), usually politicians - the antithesis to the scientist or engineer.

Objective-C only continued to exist past the 80s because of Apple/NeXT. And the closest thing it has to a formal definition is the source code to Apple's GCC fork.

Sure, UTF-8 sucks for Chinese and UTF-16 is bad at English, but in practice, high-codepoint languages are rarely mixed with low-codepoint ones. Notice that when sending an email many mail programs will select the most concise encoding that

The x86_64 ABI mandates a 16 byte aligned stack. I think Apple's just doing it in their 32-bit ABI as well to keep it consistent. Regardless of the rationale, it really isn't a big deal at all. He'll need to jump through the stack alignm

It's more work to write a client library for XML-RPC/SOAP, but a single one of those libraries is likely to work with any such service you encounter. Most users never have to write one themselves. On the other hand, it's easy to write an HT
