A lot of it is presumably binning [0]. They make a bunch of CPUs and check each to find the number of defective cores and the max clock speed it can run at before malfunctioning, then slap on the appropriate product number for that combinat

Honestly 80 models that differ by clock speed, core count, or target form factor bothers me way less than trying to figure out the difference between Comet Lake, Cascade Lake, Ice Like, Rocket Lake, etc.

That strategy seems hopelessly sensitive to the exactly granularity you calculating things at. If you have four tasks each with four subtasks and you think each subtask will take 90 minutes, should you really be budgeting an entire quarter

Spacecraft seem like one of the few cases where a small decrease in safety factor can result in a big decrease in cost. The thing about rockets is that they have to lift their own fuel, so if you decrease the mass by 10% you can leave off n

Police do have enormous discretion over who is arrested and who goes free. It could certainly be a whole lot worse, but it could also be much better.

Obviously HN commenters like us are going to think that. Honestly, I bet even YouTube commenters would say the same about their own community.

How exactly do you imagine that an unbanked person living in rural India would be able use cryptocurrency? It isn't like they can just enter their credit card into a website and buy some. Not to mention that even if they someone manage

A substantial portion of theoretical computer science. There are huge swaths of the field that deal with things like machine learning or distributed systems or computer architecture that don't really fall under that categorization.

I've always interpreted the statement to mean "theoretical CS is the only real CS: everything else is just glorified software engineering."

The reverse statement would probably be something like "The core pursuit of computer science is how to best design and harness computers" . Which is a reasonably accurate description of many areas within CS including machine lear

I don't see how it is lazy scheduling to have at least one meeting each day of the week that you cannot reschedule. Finding time for six one-hour meetings is by definition easier than finding time for one six-hour block of meetings.

Honestly this just highlights a weakness of shell scripts. The idea that you cannot use any new dependencies (or even upgraded versions of the current dependencies!) would be unthinkable in most other settings.

The problem is that sites will just pretend that any such standard doesn't actually exist. All of these sites could suppress cookie popups for clients that send a do-not-track header, but choose not to.
