In a now deleted comment somebody claimed that this info didn't contribute much. After all, this isn't reddit. However, while I was at first hesitant to submit it, there are IMO a few aspects to this that are relevant to the HN co

At first I was hesitant to submit it, but then saw that there are quite a few relevant aspects to this: 1. If the US state department can't keep its communications secure, how are we supposed to do it with the communications between ou

Ah, thank you for that link. I so far hadn't seen an English-language article on the incident, so I submitted the German one with some more context in the comments.

Here in Germany, police and intelligence agencies are separated more clearly than in most other states[1]. The anglosphere tends to be rather sloppy with these things. [1] http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=de&tl=e

Nobody is laughing. I've started re-listening some of the podcasts by people from the CCC and from that have gathered a reasonable situation-assessment mechanism: Assume "their" (NSA, GCHQ) managers are as competent as yourse

Wait a minute. Intelligence agencies _are not_ law enforcement. This is a common misconception. Intelligence agencies do not engage in law enforcement, even though in some nation-states police have access to some intelligence agency informa

I hope the prolonged exposure to low-sex-high-violence content from the US doesn't damage our moral compass over here. When I was a kid, there was still the occasional female toplessness in movies targeted at the whole family.

Yes! Are you an EU citizen? If so, it would be great if you could voice your opinion in the ongoing consultation on the review of the EU copyright rules, currently held by the European Commision. Here's the link: http://ec.e

That 50 galon number is wrong. With a modern dishwasher (at least the ones sold here in Europe) you will always use less water than hand-washing, since there is massive re-circulation of the water in the dishwasher.

So explain Spain. They have massive farming operations in a rather dry area and yet use significantly less water than the US. A significant portion of the vegetables and fruits in any grocery store here in Germany come from Spain.

Maybe they should also make micro-donations to the authors of videos possible? They'd get a cut of the payment as profit and it would also "incentivize the content creators" (I feel dirty now.).
