Wow, I want something like that for my company's codebase.

That’s an interesting story to bring up in this context, because I have always wondered how a fundamentally customer-hostile business like Oracle could be so successful. It really puts the lie to libertarian cliches about the invisible hand

Right? What an absolute cunt (I might be a bit biased because my dad was an arborist).

Well at least HN hasn't (yet?) spawned a murderous death cult. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zizians

Man, I'd never heard that story, so I verified it. Turns out it was about two dozen trees and 25 million dollars, just to put up a big tent for an Apple launch event. (Yes, the trees were removed.) What a tool, he just lost my respect.

I wonder if a large enough user community could fork zed and actually make progress on the bugs that matter?

Why do you think an AI-focused company would hesitate to put AI-generated copy on their website?

My favorite example was from Joel Spolsky's company, where bright engineers got bored with working on bug tracking software so they wrote their own C# compiler.

This was really moving and sincere. It made me think of my dad's catastrophic stroke while recovering from brain surgery. I wish that, like Wolfram's wife, he had died instantly on the operating table instead of enduring six years

I see a lot of concurrency papers from Oracle Labs but not DB papers FWIW.

There is MongoDB Labs FWIW (also Oracle Labs but I think that's just rebranded Sun Labs and not sure how much DB research happens there).

Emmy Noether was a mathematician not a physicist (despite Noether's theorem), and the main obstacle to her obtaining a professorship was pretty obviously sexism (not to mention antisemitism).
