I am old enough to remember when creating a new DSL for every task was in vogue. What used to be an issue with that approach, which I've seen hinted to in another comment here, is that I can only become proficient in so many programmin

I'd contrast Wynn-Williams with Susan Fowler: Fowler was only a few years out of school when she took a software engineer position at Uber, didn't had managerial position, yet actually stood up when things happened and made a chan

This is a useful Gedankenexperiment, but I think the replies suggesting that the conclusion is that we should replace Kafka with something new are quiet about what seems obvious to me: Kafka's biggest strength is the wide and useful ec

I understood Xinfra to not use the Kafka protocol as its API. As such, even with Xinfra deployed, you have to rewrite all the software that connects to Kafka, regardless of programming language.

It solves some issues, and creates some, since Northguard isn’t compatible with the current Kafka ecosystem. As such, you can no longer use existing software that is built on Kafka as-is. It may not be a grave concern for LinkedIn, but it c

This review is as naive as Wynn-Williams portrays herself in her memoir (which I enjoyed!) In the book, Wynn-Williams described herself as a wide-eyed, almost helpless person, which doesn't align with her pre-Facebook career as a lawye

I've been doing something similar to the email automation examples in the post for nearly a decade. I have a much simpler statistical model categorize my emails, and for certain categories also draft a templated reply (for example, a &

I am not too fond of this design for reasons of privilege separation and FHS-alignment, but can accept it as most Homebrew users don't have their Macintosh computers used by multiple people.
