Yahoo has a ton of cash and an army of really great, smart people who want the company to do well, but after 4 years there I was forced to conclude that the ship could not be turned around. I imagine that Microsoft is the same.

The problem is that Ballmer, like Yang, doesn't actually know what he's trying to say.

Why do people keep saying Twitter is revenue-free? It has search integration deals, sponsored topics and promoted tweets. It may not be profitable, but it certainly has non-trivial revenue at this point.

If so, somebody should automate this RIGHT NOW. $0.02/hour to watch British/American TV! (Depending which side of the pond you're on)

We use X11 forwarding to get this interface on our local machines with little fuss. Of course, you still have to log into the box via ssh to run the client, but that doesn't seem too onerous.

The slowly rising gc percentage (red) is a sign of memory leaks. So do you reboot regularly, or what?

This is funny, because having lived in London it's SO much easier to catch cabs here, I assumed SF was pretty good about taxi regulation. You have not experienced unavailable taxis until you have lived in London, where outside of the city c

This is pretty fascinating. I was expecting another cover-your-ass blog post, but this is a pile of interesting data work which is new to me.

Having recently implemented a CC payment system, it's not actually required by CC companies to do any kind of address verification (though companies that ship physical goods generally try). Amazon is probably more stringent.

Of course, any moment now there will be a blog post from somebody who signed up for 300 disposable credit cards and used 300 disposable email addresses to get a supercomputer for free.

This is mind-blowingly great, not only for them -- compete with Google App engine, and get people hooked on AWS early -- but also for young entrepreneurs, who can get a professional dev env for $0 and a year to see if their idea works. I th

Somebody is going through this thread systematically down-voting every single comment. So, yeah, gays in tech could still use a little extra support.

Hi! Gay co-founder of awe.sm here. I've considered posting exactly this Ask HN a few times, pleased to see somebody else did. My side project http://gaygeeks.org is also probably pretty relevant here, if you'll excuse the (second) shamele

I used it for years and finally switched away in disgust at the performance. NetBeans is very similar but much faster. (But still terrible, in lots of ways. I've yet to meet an IDE I didn't hate)

This would be fine if it were obvious to all of us that GUIs have advanced as far as they can, and the remainder of the problems we see in them were inherent to the complexity and nondeterministic nature of the systems they manage. But it's

I could not agree more. Given that IDEs are the primary tools of programmers, and unlike Photoshop users our primary skill is to build software itself, why are IDEs not the most advanced pieces of software that exist? It seems logical. They

I'm not sure this data is very good. The Lexington Club is marked as having 7% more male checkins. I live right next door to the Lex, and it's a lesbian bar. Women outnumber men there at least 10-to-1.

This complaint is as old as the hills. You may as well slap an obnoxious "Designed for HTML5" button on your site. The cost of having the world's largest addressable audience of any development platform is that web developers have to deal w
