While Amazon do indeed say that multi-AZ is the way to go, their last 3 major incidents (including last year's cloudpocalypse) have all been full-region incidents. IMHO, their biggest design problem is that they build their systems on top o

I dunno about you, but I could use a TL;DR for this: 1. They fucked up an internal DNS change and didn't notice 2. Internal systems on EBS hosts piled up with messages trying to get to the non-existent domain 3. Eventually the messages used

As Ewantoo mentioned, ITR is pretty unreliable. We have found it works as a relative measure -- when their packet loss rises, we do indeed see consumer traffic fall, though usually not by the amount their graphs would indicate.

The problem with ELBs is that they are themselves EC2 instances and use many of the global services for detecting load, scaling up, etc.. Like all of AWS's value-added services, they are therefore more likely to fail during an outage even

Those who know me will laugh to see me continuing to beat this dead horse, but this is a really great example of why ORM+scaffolding is an anti-pattern, by which I mean it seems like a good idea at first, but the costs outweigh the benefits

BREAKING: hacker nerd who has had nothing to do with Apple for 3 decades takes positions markedly different from Apple orthodoxy. Woz always takes very predictably pro-hacker positions; I'm not clear why we regard it as news when he does.

It's definitely not one load balancer, but nor is it 70krps distributed across 2000 servers. I also think having only one per datacenter would be a bit risky -- I'd have at least 2. It's very frustrating that the article doesn't make clear

They can't possibly mean 2000 of the beefy servers described as being the load-balancers, or it wouldn't be impressive at all. But it's very frustrating that the article gives the specs of the load balancers without saying how many of them

Second this. The temptation to rewrite from scratch is to be avoided; the code is going to be a mass of edge-cases, and you can't spot them all at once. Rewriting will take just as long as refactoring and introduce new bugs instead of killi
