I think they were just poorly designed. I'm kind to cables, exactly what you said is what I do. I've had maybe one Google USB-C cable fail on me across many phones and many years, cables in cars, etc. But I had two Lightning cable

Eh, I have an 8GB Chromebook and I start to notice issues at around 100 open tabs, with the Linux VM running, Obsidian, and VS Code. So you're a bit off.

And to be fair, those phones quickly got to the point where the flap over the USB port would break or not seal. And the back would get loose, because Samsung ruined the OS so it needed frequent battery removed reboots. And the finger print

There is also Illumos/OpenIndiana/OmniOS, basically continuations of OpenSolaris. I have used OpenIndiana for many years and it's been dead reliable and stable. There's quite a few "quality of life" differences

I did the latter, across usually about 4000+ CPUs. That got me a peak of 15 or so GB/sec read from one GCS bucket, writing to another. But yeah if it's not something that can be paralleled then it sucks.

The latency is higher so the key is parallelism... Which means you need more cores/hardware/VMs/pick your poison. New but same problem...
