I believe this is the best example of the problems that can be caused: https://x.com/TristanACooper/status/1194298167824650240 Open both images and compare. The visual joke is completely ruined with the cropping.

> There's no easy way out of this. One generation will effectively have to give up their welfare, but nobody wants to do this (understandable). The UK cannot afford to be the welfare state it wants to be. It can be done over a perio

Actually once you are back in your home country (or in fact any other country) you can pay an optional £180/year to buy a full qualifying year. Anybody who ever worked in the UK can do it and you don’t need to have ever been a citizen.

The economic situation in the UK has become bizarre. I would recommend interested HNers to read up on the State Pension Triple Lock; and the various income tax cliff edges as some key examples. With respect to the income tax, it is possible

You are right from a technical point, I think, but in reality - how would one begin to make that change?

It seems to me that most semantic HTML has helped third parties extract data from web pages for their own use. Perhaps if you are an important primary source of information like a government service that could be useful if it helps you adva

I started my career in the UK around 2010 and it could have been normal banter at that point but I feel workplace relationships have generally become more corporate and risk-averse since then and it wouldn't be acceptable in most offic

WhatsApp does appear to only have access to a subset of photos on my iPhone. The UX is a little clunky because you have to “add” a new photo which it can then access, but I prefer the privacy of it.

I feel that I understand the leverage paradox concept, and the induced demand concept, but I don't understand how they are the same concept. Can you explain the connection a little more?

I like using LLMs and I have found they are incredibly useful writing and reviewing code at work. However, when I want sources for things, I often find they link to pages that don't fully (or at all) back up the claims made. Sometimes

That's an interesting way of looking at it thanks for sharing. In that way it's similar to Google paying to be the default search engine in Firefox or on iOS. They _did_ have the best search engine at the time but they still paid

My work Mac regularly pops up an alert box claiming that Slack is “trying to install a new helper tool”. I have no idea why or what it means. I asked IT how I could verify it was legit and they didn’t know. I often wonder if this could also
